While many restaurants have stopped charging service charge in the bills as per guidelines issued by Department of Consumer Affairs on Fair Business Practices by Restaurants and Hotels on the subject of charging service fee in their bills. It is also seen that even some diners are also paying tip despite the service charges having been charged in the bill. One of my friend has to face the similar situation as he was under impression that the service charges have come to an end. The name of the restaurant was Pind Balluchi, Janpath, Cannaught Place. While some of the restaurants do reverse the amount of service charge if asked by the diners, the reversal just take place only on the value of service charge by overwriting. In my view, the reversal of the amount should take place even on the GST value charged on such amount of service charge. This is examplified as : say a restaurant has charged an amount of Rs. 100/- as service charge, the reversal should take place with Rs. 100/- + Rs. 18/- (18% GST) i.e Rs. 118/- as the same GST was charged at the time of billing which included service charge in computing GST. The complaint was raised by me in a restaurant and the amount of GST was refunded ofcourse with resistant. more

No , No service charges to be implemented in any hotel. What is the justification? We are landing up with paying 18% GST , then why to pay over and above service Taxes? Again the waiters wait for the Tips!! Why ? The hotels keep 50% or more profits in the food items , let them spend 5% extra to pay to their employees!! Tips and service charges are to be stopped by the consumer forum. more

Some restaurants in Mumbai are displaying a play card near entrance saying "We charge Service Charge". So it is for the customer to decide whether they want to visit the restaurant or not. more
