This auspicious day is also a new year day for people in many states of India. As far as I know, AP, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Assam, J & K, and some states of Eastern India celebrate New Year day on this day. In AP, we start the day with prayers to the Lord wearing new clothes after a good head bath (Abhyngan Snan). The house is nicely cleaned up on the earlier day, and decorated with green mango leaves, marygold flowers etc tied as mala to all the doors. A special feature of this day is that we take a prasad made of Neem flowers, raw mango cut pieces, gur, green chillies, salt and some tamrind (Imli) juice. All are mixed in approximation and taken on empty stomach. It may be noted that each item represents one of the six ruchis also known as "shadruchi' which according to "PAKA SHASTRA" (art of cooking) are essential for a grand meal. A visit to the nearest temple and prayers offered to the presiding diety. In the afternoon a sumptuous meal with sweets, different forms of rice preperations, puran poli ( Bobbatlu in Telugu) etc. The evening every temple conducts a programme of Panchang (Almanac) Shravanam where people collect, listen to the year's forecast as per the panchangam, and offer gifts and charity to the Pandit reading out the Panchangam ....(essentially to help the purohits in the villages of yesteryears !) This is essentially the culture of Andhra in brief and I have taken the liberty of writing a long and detailed post for the information and knowledge of our friends from other states... to understand our Bharat, i.e our Nation. more
