Waste to Wealth: Possibilities/Recommendations

1. Waste could be de-silted and used as a fertilizer
2. Generation of electricity could be done by processing of waste for methane
3. Sewage treatment plants ( STP) can produce potable water and power also, with new developed Technologies
4. Waste foods can be recycled and transformed to fodder for poultry birds and pigs
5. Plastic can be used for making bus stop shelters, carpeting the road and making benches for school
6. High chain carbons can be converted to gases and used
7. Residual inert can be converted into bricks and tiles
8. The Govt. should cut wasteful subsidies and encourage private sector by offering incentives to invest in recycling of waste in big cities
9. We should follow countries like Singapore and Canada to generate electricity using waste
10. Composting of household leftovers like pooja flowers, unused vegetables' parts thrown away after cutting, can be used for the rooftop gardens/plants in the house
11. Polythene can be Pyrolized (heated in the absence of air) to produce a liquid product that could be fractionated into kerosene, diesel and petroleum or used in the manufacture of certain chemicals
12. All organic hotel waste to be collected by Hotel Association and processed for biogas.
13. The dry waste so collected by the waste collector will be sorted in to different categories and may be sold to vendors or transported to cement co
14. The fruit market, vegetable market waste and slaughter house wastes can be supplied to a bio-methane plant where it will be converted to bio gas and sludge
15. Research laboratories are required to be established to enhance knowledge of waste management more

There is a process called Thermal depolymerisation which converts plastics to light crude oil (synthetic). Longer polymers can be converted to short chain polymers of petroleum hydrocarbons. The gases generated, especially methane, can be heated and used in a gas turbine power plant to generate electricity. Another use is as CNG in vehicles. Also methane can be converted to methanol. Methanol is further converted to gasoline (petrol) as well as olefins. It can also be used to further produce MTBE, formaldehyde, formic acid, acetic anhydride and other chemicals used in various industries across the country. Methanol plants have already been set up in North America, where methane is mostly obtained from natural gas, and are emerging as alternatives to conventional crude oil refining systems. Benefits: 1) Through this process, plastic waste can be effectively utilized. 2) Dependence on fossil fuels for crude oil will be reduced. 3) If methanol plants are set up, then people will become skilled and get employed in those plants. more
Here are few small scale innovations that need to be encouraged, developed and given wide publicity over garbage reduction and vast options in recycling. Source Segregation in each household: Legalise mandatory recycling and composting. Introduce recycling and scheduled clean up. Make RED bin for all household rubbish e.g.; kitchen leftovers, plastic, card board, tin containers that can be recycled. Use GREEN bin for recycling kitchen organic waste and start forming compost for your garden. You can cut down garbage by more than half. Simple kits can be developed. It is worth considering. Turn your kitchen waste into biogas for cooking: Develop energy efficient cook-stoves to suit household applications. Provide durable, high performing cook-stoves in the market utilizing locally available materials to provide an alternate use to firewood/charcoal/kerosene. Poor can save 50% per month in fuel cost utilizing kitchen bio-degradable waste. Entrepreneurs undertaking manufacture to be encouraged. A small bio gas plant gives a continuous flame for two hours. Pre-fabricated mini biogas plants have great potential in the emerging markets. Biogas Plants for urban and industrial wastes can be great source of “Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency” Many Municipal Corporations are now considering installation of biogas for electricity and manure generation. more

Bio gas, by product is also in use as composed ( KHAD) in agriculture, by many small plants in villages. So If Govt. make a policy of making use of human waste by Big hotels, hostels, pubic toilets, for their garden and also can sale to the others. This composed by product is in a liquid form, thus can collected in storage tanks than from storage tank by means of closed vessel mounted on truck to required destination. Of coarse this require separate team of worker to manage regularly, which will give employment to new youth by the Govt. as well as private sector, and N. G. O. more
-Investment in R&D and use of technology for finding easy and affordable waste disposal would be key to improving waste management more
