The Indian Railway is on the right track with emphasis on infrastructure development, than announcing popular "Trains" on over burden tracks. The medium speed trains, proposed high speed trains give the future vision of the department. The Road - Rail Container trailers is very much applauded. It not only reduce time, but also increases container service to remote areas connected with roads. The diamond quadrilateral and goods corridor is also trend setting.
Still we have many things to concentrate upon.
1. The newly formed water transport system will get developed and it will be advantageous to the Railways, if the connectivity is enabled with small, medium as well as large ports with facility of direct loading of containers
2. Additional feeder tracks to be constructed to make more and more passengers use Railways. That is most of the Railway Stations are far from the cities and a few kilometres of extended tracks to the heart of the city will improve passenger traffic and the viability of the railways. For this purpose, Micro Metros with less than 10 KM is to be employed. Such a system will save time and money for the passengers and it will be beneficial to both Railways and the passengers. Nowadays, a person travelling from Ernakulam to Kayamkulam will have to take Auto at each end for reaching the station and town which will be more than double the fare of the entire journey.
3. The persons travelling from town to town regularly may need to take their own vehicles with them after reaching their destination. So, if there is facility for roll on roll off for passenger cars and two wheelers, it will be beneficial for both the railways and the passengers.
4. The infrastructure development is a long process and we need to have some results projected to show the people something is going on by introducing some Fast Trains before waiting for the completion of infrastructure developement. It is true that the speed of the trains are increased considerably with very little delays, we may consider building semi-high speed coaches at the proposed Kanjikode Coach Factory or any other factory to meet the future needs.
