TRAFFIC PROBLEM IS DEALT WITH GOOD INTENTION, I THINK IT HAS BEEN IMPROVED FROM PAST.

Whilst I must admit Kolkata Traffic Police is very efficient in handling and unsnarling traffic jams I have to say they are totally and deliberately inefficient in enforcement of the law and traffic rules.
Two wheelers, auto-rickshaws and taxis violate traffic signals with impunity and policemen look the other way deliberately because probably these people have political patronage. Two wheelers are supposed to carry only two adult persons but invariably one can see more than that riding on the scooters and motorcycles. With the extra person the control over the bike is definitely more difficult and it is a danger to others. Two wheelers also jump traffic lights more as a rule than an exception because they think the traffic lights are only meant for four wheeled cars. Autos and taxis also follow the same way because rules are meant to be followed only by privately owned cars! However the policemen turn a blind eye to these infringements.
The only time the Traffic Police is very active is the period before festivals like Saraswati Puja, Durga Puja, Diwali/Kali Puja etc. I wonder what is the connection!
The traffic signal timing system also is defective. The amber, or yellow, between the red and the green should be for at least five to ten seconds depending on the volume of traffic at that particular crossing.
The logic is very simple.
You are standing at a red light and the light turns amber. You are NOT supposed to move immediately; you are only supposed to prepare to move forward. Move forward only when the light turns green.
Take the reverse situation. You are approaching a crossing and you see the lights are green. If the light turns amber when you are still some distance away, slow down and stop at the STOP LINE. If you are at the crossing and the light turns amber DO NOT JAM THE BRAKES as the car behind you will bang into you. Continue and cross the intersection in those ten seconds that the amber light is on. THIS IS THE REASON WHY AMBER LIGHT SHOULD GLOW FOR TEN SECONDS.
Speed Limits laid down must also be realistic. Flyovers have been constructed to ease and speed up the flow of traffic. If the speed limit on the flyovers is kept as low as normal roads the very purpose is defeated.
Further, having different speed limits for different vehicles on the same road / flyover is also unreasonable. Imagine on MAA Flyover cars can travel at 60 KMPH and trucks at 40 KMPH. So, if there are two trucks in the two lanes how do the cars travel at 60 KMPH? By weaving left and right? What happens to lane discipline in that case?
