One of the main reasons for traffic jams is crowding at the intersections, which police can easily control, if they take a proactive approach. This will facilitate the movement of traffic when signal light changes. Other points I would like to mention are irregular parking, double parking and indiscriminate entry of vehicles including two and three wheelers in NO ENTRY areas. When brought to the attention of police, the attitude is to express lame excuses and NO Action. Hawkers are occupying pavements and portions of the roads.
My observation as regards the traffic police in the Lokhandwala (Andheri) area is concerned, they are never seen in the market area whereas they are always outside the market the reason of which I have not understood on account of which people park their vehicle randomly inconveniencing others as well as to the patients who are unable to pass through the heavy jam that take place in the area at times it is two to three lane of parking and nobody is bothered about this haphazard parking it needs to be looked into in the top most priority
Traffic is chaotic from Byculla South till CST specially in Bhindi Bazaar, Nagpada, Null bazaar, Dongri, Mohammed Ali Road etc because there is no implementation of traffic rules by the traffic police. As rightly mentioned by Ms. Arya the constables or officers are only waiting for outstation vehicles (non-mumbai) or trucks etc for making money, but they are not interested in getting even basic rules like helmets for 2 wheelers and seat belt for LMV; implemented nor the signal system is practical because majority of people drive in any direction without any respect for signals even in the traffic police and officers presence and to add insult to injury the BMC is not bothered to remove encroachments from the footpaths and buildings of these areas, maybe even they are getting something. Visit these areas in daytime and all of you will get a clear idea.
my observation is traffic police does not stand at the signal to manage the traffic but they have their corners where they hide and wait for someone to commit mistake. if citizen have not committed any mistake still if the mood of traffic police is not right then he will force you to accept that you have been wrong and he will misuse his power for some money. they are totally absconding when there is traffic problem . they are highly motivated in making money rather than their duty.
I rate Mumbai Traffic Police at 2 out of 5. Lots need to be done, as I wrote by a separate mail copied below: A lot needs to be done for effective and efficient Traffic Management. Many one-ways can be made both ways, many feed/service roads can be de clogged, many closed roads can be opened up, many delayed road / culvert / bridge constructions can be expedited, many constables can become more effective rather than harassing people and mini lorry drivers to make money, many senior officials can contribute to make our roads better-motorable and pedestrian friendly, many signals can be scientifically adjusted so that the flow of traffic is ensured, rather than stopping at every signal. And, many, many such things can be done by conscientious management of this very important function. Senior officials should be taking this important responsibility and manage in efficient and scientific manner.
