My brush with the Parivahan department is still on...the ordeal continues. The most corrupt department it was, and continues to be. I had to renew my licence but due to Covid restrictions crossed the safe limit, so had to go for a test. Form-filling was such a huge task, you just can't seem to click the right links and if you think you've done it right, the same link will lead to you to a different page every time!! Anyway that taken care of, visit to the department at Sarai Kale Khan revealed the corrupt side of the department....can't even begin to list each step. At the test track they treat you like pests, right from a guard (yes, give a person little authority and he is so keen to wield it) to the Instructor/Inspector (there is no custom to introduce themselves, they only talk down to you and if you are a woman you are subjected to the indifferent/condescending attitude that is pandemic to our society) they tell you who the boss is. I smelt a rat and knew the system was set up to fail people and not test them. Sure enough, after much shuffling and waiting and when I thought the test was a sail for me (after all I have been driving in the city for the last 30 years), I was informed that I had passed the tough tests (like doing a reverse 'S' and parallel parking), but I flunked doing the '8' test because I did not do it the right way. Now if you have arrows on both sides of the figure doing an '8' can not be wrong if you did from left to right or the other way! But no, I was asked to shut up (what else, after all, women are asked to do in our society) and appear again if I wanted the licence. As I write this, I am still struggling to get another appointment because I run into a wall on the Parivahan site. It is leading me the merry dance I am so familiar with by now. I only wish the concerned Minister/s and bureaucrats are made to go through the exercise they devise for common citizens. FYI, family and friends are suggesting I should simply pay my way and get the licence. Let me see how it goes.....
