There is a general concern voiced by all that because of the increase in the maternity leave as per the now policy by the govt., the employers would discriminate against women and avoid hiring them - as this would increase their cost of manpower.
The solution being offered is to revise the scale downwards.
However, my appeal is to come up with a policy that gives equal leave - maternity/paternity to both genders on the birth/adoption of a child. Thsi may be 12 or 20 or 26 weeks. It should be equal for both men and women. With this, we would achieve a two fold benefit :
1. Now, maternity/paternity leave would be just like LTA/PPF all employees would be eligible for it. So, while overall cost for a business would go up - it would be a part of the employee welfare and work-life balance scheme. Women would no longer be discriminated against and avoided for hiring.
2. The society would be given a message tht both genders are responsible for the upbringing of a child right from infancy and not just the mother. This would make a huge impact for women equality at home and in the workplace.
We know that a child's development starts right at infancy - in terms of its social and emotional needs too. For a healthy society, it is important to recognise the importance of child care by the parents themselves and plan/incentivise that - rather than leave it to the discretion of the individual or let their decisions be led by their financial emergencies.
Please sign this petition so we may have a healthy society and empowered women. And of course more loving and involved fathers.
(We could consider capping this benefit at upto two kids if there is general consensus on that).
