Electronic and social media is increasingly circulating fake news and thus polluting the mind of citizens with wrong and unsubstantiated news. This is not a healthy trend and must be arrested.
There is no effective mechanism to control and freedom of expression versus spreading fake news must be differentiated.
In Singapore Government has enacted a law that can punish fake news creators.
We need such a law or similar law to restrain spread of irresponsible information. With technology available it is possible to identify fake news creators. Onus of proving that what is spread is genuine should lie with the person originating the fake news.
Then Judiciary can take care based on complaints lodged by affected parties.
This should be taken up by next Government in Parliament.
