Do you carry your own bag when going shopping? - Inputs Sought

Given the limited waste recycling infrastructure in India, it is critical that we as a nation generate less waste and think twice before having to take a plastic or paper bag at a retail shop. This can be done by us carrying a bag from home when going shopping. Shops imposing a small charge for a paper bag reduces misuse and serves as a reminder to carry our own jute or cloth bag, next time we go shopping.

With this post we seek your inputs on what are YOU currently doing when you go shopping. How can a win-win situation be created here for Consumers, Retailers and most importantly the Environment!

We look forward to your inputs! Below are some of your aggregate inputs on what all citizens can do to reduce waste we generate!

Reducing waste we generate

1.Old cardboard boxes can be used as dustbins in houses and offices
2.Vegetable waste, kitchen waste and other wet waste should be used to create compost
3.People should carry a jute bag to the market so that they don’t need paper/poly bags from vendors, which eventually go into the dustbin
4.Food should be cooked in optimum quantity so that it does not get wasted
5.Every Indian must resolve to finish all he takes on their food plate
6.Everyone should minimize keeping paper copies of documents for correspondence – an email/soft copy would work just fine
7.Subscription of mobile bills, bank statements etc. should be changed to ‘email only’
8.Washable utensils should be used in place of plastic and thermocol plates in house parties etc. to reduce the waste generated
9.The printed advertisement leaflets that we get with newspapers are printed only on one side. Their back side could be used for making rough notes. more

I always carry non plastic bag for shopping. I have a habit of keeping one extra bag and trash bag in my vehicle more
I always carry folding non plastic bag for shopping. And when big quantities are purchased I carry up to my vehicle without taking plastic bag. I request all the shop keepers to give empty cardboard boxes to customers to carry their items so that waste at shop can be reduced and customers can avoid plastic bags more
Yes,we always carry cloth bag when we go for shopping. more
Its always good to carry your own cloth bag because it can be washed and reused. Paper bags will activate cutting down trees. more
