One of the areas needing immediate attention is passenger amenities. Although, Indian Railways only earns 27% of its revenue from passenger traffic, it has a lot of potential for non operational revenue, like advertising, etc. How about installing a lot of billboards on the railway routes for expanding revenue. Some other suggestions: 1. Provision of pay and use toilets at stations and even on trains. The amenities in such toilets should be top class. The fee can be sufficiently high. 2. Pay and use waiting rooms on the same lines/philosophy. 3. We are paying a heavy amount for travelling by AC 2 Tier and AC 1 Class coaches. However, the amenities and the cleanliness in the coaches are nowhere near the standards they should be. AC 1 Class should have the same amenities as a 4 or 5 star hotel room or the First Class cabin in Aircraft. 4. There should be provision to pre-book your meals. The Railways should tie up with top Hotel and Restaurant chains and they could provide meals. The cost could be higher (May be a minimum of Rs. 100/- per meal). The meals should also be served in better containers. We could use some eco-friendly technologies, so that the disposal is also easier. 5. Garbage disposal is another area of concern. After a few hours of journey, the bins are chocked and people start throwing garbage out of the windows. So either organise frequent cleaning or utilise technologies which can press or shred the garbage when thrown into the bins. more
The site for spotting your train also needs improvement. Some suggestions are: 1. Include platform number in the update. 2. The mobile site (which should be the most used) is too heavy and takes a long time to load. Since the speed of mobile data networks is abysmal, the mobile site should be very light. No need of all the bells and whistles. Just make it train no., date of journey and boarding station for the query and time of arrival, platform number and delay in the reply. 3. Since everybody is in possession of a ticket, there should be no need for drop down lists in the mobile site. 4. Start a separate mobile site with a different URL. more
