100% FDI in defence

The new government’s initiative to introduce 100% FDI in Defence is probably a hasty step by the new Government. We have enough money and resources in our country to fund and further defence research and weapon building. A clarion call by the Defence Minister to all Indians to invest only one share at least for a defence manufacturing and research unit will flood the nation with all the funds required for establishing the said unit. Secondly with over 15 IITs and several NITs and other premier Engineering institutes in the country which are the talent bank for the world over can be given the daunting task of designing and developing the defence equipment that suits our country’s interest in collaboration with our defence forces. This would certainly reduce our dependence on the foreign countries for seeking sophisticated equipment which is sold at a very premium price and with many tags and restrictions. We can come out of such shackles if we replan in this manner and as such the Government should rethink on the FDI issue more

It is a very welcome step , if we start investing in new technology we will never be able to catch up with the newest tech. in defence. The first step is ToT to be at par with the advanced countries then comes R& D and other things to be at par or beyond what advanced nations are doing. more
Ask not India can do for you, ask what you can do for India! Remember J.F.Kennedy Ashok Varma more
Dear Mr Srinivas, Good thought provoking topic has been chosen by you. Being a little passimistic to discuss, we need to seriously audit our system as a whole. We are in a vicious cycle. Poor education system (devalued), reservations (in schools, professional colleges, jobs, appointments, promotions), corrupt environment is what we breath (eat, drink, breath and so on). So we need to audit where is the bright spark of the country going into for the last few years. Performance in these IITs/ NITs etc and where are they now and what are they doing. How many of these are really into our countries Government (PSU etc) technological outfits. Firstly, I am a firm believer of the fact that each one of us in this country need to think of our country first, before we even dream of our religion, caste creed etc. We mostly have brain drain. The defence scenario posted by you needs a relook. If we can produce I am sure we will not have to go out. Money comes later. Monetary contribution will not help. Mental and physical contribution in what ever we do, particularly those in Govt jobs need to contribute. Our attitude needs a change. Infact, my observation is lot of people in Govt spend and waste lot of Govt money callously. We feel as if money is being sought from some outsider. Mostof us fail to understand, the Govt money is our money. There may be some cases where money should not be a criteria like defence equipment procurement, maintenance, upgradation etc. But other budgetary heads can be well controlled and money saved. So a few issues. Lets contribute from our end. Wish somebody could carry out an audit. On 12/06/2014, Oruganti Srinivas wrote: > more
As far as I am concerned if we open defense sector for 100% FDI, we could adapt the latest technologies from the foreign players. They will setup the factories here which will enable to open more direct as well as indirect jobs. And in the mean time Govt help DRDO (in terms of funds) for more innovations which help them to compete with these foreign players. I believe it could reduce scams especially in defense sector, in purchasing weapons. And also our country will be equipped with most modern sophisticated technology to counter any attacks coming from across the borders. But all the purchases should be made in a transparent manner. Most important is the flow of foreign money which will help our currency to appreciate which enhance industrial growth as well as creation of more jobs. And also more foreign players in India itself can attract more of IITians or NITians to work for our own country in our country itself. more
100% FDI is a very sensible move , what Srinivas is saying about indigenous research , production capability etc is a long term goal which Modi Govt is / will do anyway as stated by him many times . However India has some serious problems with arms , in case of a war , India cannot even sustain it for 4 days . To overcome that in quickest possible time & so solve the immediate need of the defense , 100%FDI is the only solution & a wise one . This would also enable technology transfer in a very short time which would help indigenous development later .. more
