Not only biscuits. The rates of GST finalised by the concerned committee will cause increase in taxes from 1 to 8% on majority of consumable items and services. In instances of reduction in tax rates from 0.5 to 3% only will take place on a few items. Cunningly, the government is increasing taxes on most of the items & services in the name of GST to avoid public opposition and criticism. Does the government has an excuse for keeping the petrol & diesel out of the purview of the GST as also for not finalising the rates on tobacco and tobacco products? It has also done a blunder by deciding to continue various cess in addition to the GST, which fails the purpose of introducing GST and the common man will be burdened with substantial additional taxes on implementation of GST. more

Soap and Toothpaste are also 18% "luxury" items. Bathing and brushing your teeth have now come under the "radar" of Govt. GST was a magnificent opportunity for Govt to rationalize and reduce day to day expenses (in absence of any Real Growth except constantly "reinvented numbers"). In their anxiety to grab money out of everyone, they (most of them get this all for free) seem to have overextended themselves. Now everyone will add some random root into soap & toothpaste, call it Ayurvedic, and get taxed at 12%. Even Ramdevji is cgrumbling, he wants his medicinal products (say, like dishwash soap, basmati rice & fruit juice) to be taxed much less than the current 12%. All this is the result of a misplaced sense of entitlement. Very soon, AyushDaaru can hit the stands. more
