200000 mid levels IT jobs to go in 12 months

Today's ET says more than 200,000 mid level IT employees losing jobs in next one year. Already white collar jobs are not growing. Now more job losses. I would keep my expectations on economic growth very low.

What is everyone feeling about the economy. We may see 3-4% real GDP growth next few quarters. more

There is lot of turbulence in IT industry - some jobs are being lost in old/obsolete fields and new on are getting created in new fields. The industry is in state of flux and this is expected. What matters most is " what is the net effect of such change" more
I as a business person would like to blame employees themselves for this situation. Today, employees do not value growth in knowledge, but only look at salaries and join another company just because they get little higher salary in spite of the fact that current company has invested heavily in developing their skills for the job. They do not even consider learning opportunity provided by current company and should spend atleast couple of years in same company before switching jobs. So, naturally, companies will also start thinking in not investing in growth of employee knowledge and value. Rather, hire an outsider with same knowledge and skill. So, current employee will then become redundant and lose his job eventually. This is my conclusion after more than 26 years in business. Again, I will emphasize our obsession with buying chinese goods. We are making a grave mistake and putting our jobs at risk by buying chinese goods. Our industry will be destroyed and we lose jobs eventually. more
Well Said and in my 30 years of experience, my obesevations are quite similar more
Though i am not an economist, but based on my long industrial experience , i would certainly say that many times such reports are exaggerated, n published just out of blue. The information technology there is great difference between Engineer, n other such degree holders are taking lot of pain to get admission in reputed colleges n universities, where as there are number of institutes who give admission to the aspirants easily compared to writing entrance exams n getting admitted. So the quality of such qualification holders are in large numbers many work in small computer or it firms, web designing. Etc; had all such IT institutes done bit good homework, there are lot of process industries who need PLC/DCS experts, even in other technical fields we don't have such experts. Even the mathematical modeling of rivers, agriculture , space science n last but not least the most important area is simulation softwares for medical, oil n gas industries, power plants, automobiles , education n training software engineers we are yet to develop n produce. If we can develop such qualified n trained IT experts the world is the market for them. So rather then simply publishing such negative reports ,better to throw light n focus in these areas. more
