Calcium in bones is maximum unto 25 years of age in a normal person. Thereafter it gradually depletes. For normal people it can be taken after calcium test and normally after middle age. However in case of pregnancies and bone fractures it can be taken immediately. Calcium in tablets and syrup are in many forms such as calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium from milk etc. The total amount of calcium in any form should be 1000 mg or more. Sometimes elemental calcium is also given in ingredients, which is better in 400 mg to 500 mg for people above 50 years. The best required ingredients in Calcium supplements are Vitamin D and Vitamin K2 7. These are further supplemented by few minerals like Zinc, Magnesium etc. The absorption of calcium in all form is best in citrate form which can also be taken before or after the food. Best if calcium can be obtained from dairy products e.g. milk, curd, cheese (total about one Kg), if one is not allergic to any of them and from green vegetables including leafy ones and fruits including citrus foods. However pregnant women, persons with fractures and deficient in calcium should take calcium supplements as advised by doctors and give some break after attaining calcium in requisite amount. Over calcium is bad for health particularly in stone formation and making cholesterol deposit hard in heart, kidney, brain and other veins. more
