My mother is battling Lung Cancer for the past 3 years. After going through chemotherapy and targeted oral medication (Made in India), the Onco has now put her on an imported drug called OPDIVO ( NIVOLUMAB ) as the next level of treatment as according to him, the previous oral medications have reached their effectiveness limit and she may not respond to chemotherapy so well. Would any of the readers know about this drug which in USA was released earlier by FDI for treatment of MELANOMA and more recently approved for treatment of Lung Cancer, its side effects and more importantly its effectiveness or otherwise in treating the disease. more

There is a lot of research in the field of Ketogenic diet or a diet in which there are no or very little carbohydrates. It doesn't cost anything and you don't have to discontinue your treatment - just a change of your diet. Try putting your mother on a carb free diet for three months and see the results. more

Nivolumab from BMS has been approved by USFDA recently for Lung cancer. It is a programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) blocking antibody for the treatment of advanced melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer. Treatment is very expensive and beyond the reach of middle class Indians. The cost for the initial 12-week phase of the combination is about $141,000, and then $12,500 a month for Opdivo alone, totaling roughly $256,000 if a patient stays on therapy for a year, according to a Bristol-Myers. Subsequent full-year costs of therapy would be about $150,000 for Opdivo. AND it only extends life by 6-8 months and does not cure the cancer as such. So one has to decide if he can afford it for getting few more months of life extension for the loved family? more
