A demand for professionally run hospitals

Is it time that we as a nation took serious stock of how professionally run are our hospitals? Are they doing what they are meant to do professionally and to the best of their ability? Do we have hospitals that meet world standards?

A lot of questions that are raked up every time there is a tragedy and then life goes on. The blame game starts and a few heads roll and life goes on. The media goes into a frenzy. every channel has some 10 people all shouting and screaming and getting no where and the TRP game starts and life goes on.

STOP. Please stop! Is this what we have come down to after 70 years of Independence? Can we please stop and take stock of how we have set our standards so low that we are fine to loose our children, our families, our country and we will still not raise our standards. Because we are ok with OK...average, chalta hai, OK.

Our public hospital systems are the pits and we know it, we have known it for 70 years. They are smoldering, disease infested, corrupt places that have very little to do with cure and treatment and more to do with being money machines.

Can we break down the problem into different categories and put down suggestions on improving the system?

Areas of concern :

Government :
- Disinterested
- Corrupt
- Administered by people with no experience or knowledge about the medical system or hospital management.
- Illiterate
- Vote bank politics
- No value of life
- Compensation does not come out of their pocket so that is the easiest solution.
- No 5 - 10 year plan on making it a workable and effective system.
- No accountability

Medical institutions / colleges
- Churn out doctors like mice
- No standards
- No ethics
- Money making corporations
- No regulating body
- Run by business men and not men of medicine
- No accountability
- No transparency
- Donations and not ability is standard of selection

Hospital
- No upgrade of skills or equipment
- Badly maintained and managed
- Unsanitary and unhygienic
- Money making entities
- Unprofessional
- No regulating body to ensure compliance
- Unhygienic and unsanitary
- Built in unsanitary surroundings - near nallas, open garbage dumps and in small sheds and houses.
- Break all garbage disposal regulations
- Corrupt

Hospital Staff
- Pay donations to get into medical college
- look at job as an ATM to make money
- Corrupt
- Unprofessional
- Get jobs in public hospitals due to quotas and reservations
- Unethical and amoral
- Life is cheap
- No sense of hygiene or sanitation
- Unprofessional
- Lack of ability or interest in the job

Patients and families
- Don't follow hospital regulations
- Destroy equipment and infrastructure valuable to so many patients lives
- Pay money to get out of turn favours
- Use the hospital like a hotel with little or no regard for hindering patient treatment.
- Disregard for sanitation and hygiene
- Disruptive and irresponsible

Solutions
Complete overhall of our medical system and how it functions. No quotas or reservations for Medical staff - we cannot play with lives. Time we stopped playing Russian roulette with the lives of our citizens to gain some political millage through reservations. Only deserving candidates should be allowed to join medical college and become doctors and nurses.

Please let us focus on solutions and hopefully we will have enough buy in for this to be presented to the govt to take up seriously. more

Superbly written Anita, please let me know how I can help. more
Yes, we do have hospitals those meet with world standard and we have fleets of skilled physicians equivalent to the best physicians around the world, which fact is already acknowledged on different occasions. Large number of patients from foreign countries rush to our hospitals every year and get cured of their ailments at much less expenses in comparison to their own countries. However, these hospitals are out of reach of our own common men because of their sky rocketing prices as far as Indians are concerned. We always accuse our hospitals and doctors for their unending greed for money but if we review without prejudice the cost involvement in becoming a specialised doctor as well as establishing & maintenance of a world standard hospital, we would probably amend ourselves. Where is the justification in charging Rs.1 crore plus by the medical colleges for a 5 year medical course? What bars the government in opening more and more medical colleges alike the engineering colleges? Is it justified to impose GST on medicines, medical equipment and medical services? Government hospitals (owned by central & state governments) are the preys of total mismanagement and chaos. Nepotism and corruptions therein are inherent making these hospitals unable to provide proper medical facilities despite being equipped with renowned doctors. In fact health services are not in the list of priorities of our government otherwise budget allocations towards health service would have been much more than what is presently being allocated. Unless & until the government substantially improve its policies & outlook towards health services, the monopoly of the private hospitals and their apathy towards our common financially backward people will continue. more

We have to be proud of the fact that our trained doctors are no way less competent than their counterparts in the other developed nations. Infact, Indian doctors abroad are earning good name for their professional competence. The problem with medicos in India is corruption, VIP attitude and a desire to be rich overnight. They fleece poor patients, misguide them into costly treatments and operations. The Ministry of health should tighten its grip on the medical practice. India's intellectual talent if properly harnessed and guided can bring astounding results in the next decade. more
