A Timely Move by the Railway Ministry Following the Delhi Stampede:
In a decisive step to enhance passenger safety and manage crowds more effectively, the Railway Ministry has introduced access control measures at 60 major stations across the country. This move comes in the wake of the tragic stampede incident in Delhi and is aimed at preventing similar mishaps in the future.
Pilot Projects Underway
Pilot projects implementing this access control system have already been launched at key stations, including New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Patna.
- Under this system, only passengers with confirmed reserved tickets will be allowed entry to platforms.
- The main objective is to contain crowds within designated waiting areas, allowing passengers to access platforms only when their train is about to arrive.
- This will help prevent the build-up of large, uncontrolled crowds on the platforms.
Key Features of the Access Control System:
- Only confirmed ticket holders will be permitted entry to the platforms.
- Passengers with unconfirmed (waiting list) tickets will have to wait in designated areas.
- Unauthorized entry points will be sealed to streamline access and prevent overcrowding.
Additional Crowd Management Measures:
To support this initiative, the Railway Ministry is also implementing a series of complementary crowd control and station management measures:
- Construction of wider Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) to ease movement.
- Establishment of war rooms at major stations for real-time monitoring and quick response.
- Installation of CCTV cameras for enhanced surveillance.
- Appointment of senior officers as Station Directors, vested with both financial and administrative powers.
- Deployment of modern communication equipment, such as walkie-talkies and public announcement systems.
- New uniforms and ID cards for station staff to ensure better visibility and coordination.
These initiatives mark a significant shift toward more organized, secure, and passenger-friendly railway station management.
IF DONE ON WAR FOOTING AND SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED, THEY COULD SERVE AS A MODEL FOR MODERNIZING RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS INDIA.
