Aadhaar becomes Optional
The Supreme Court had ordered against the government’s orders to make linking of Aadhaar number a must to avail almost all government services and even the private services like the mobile phone. The SC had upheld the sanctity of Aadhaar but with condition.
The initial UIDAI proposal suggested that once an individual turns 18, he/she would be given six months to decide if he wants to withdraw from Aadhaar. The Law Ministry, however, reportedly recommended that the option to withdraw be made to all citizens regardless of the age group.
The proposal also says that those who opt out of the Aadhaar scheme, won’t be able to avail the government schemes and subsidies where linking Aadhaar is a mandatory. more
