Aadhar Card for Sale
In a day that the Supreme Court the Centre to immediately withdraw the instruction making the Aadhaar card mandatory for citizens to avail of government services, a sting operation has alleged that officers issuing the cards are willing to do so in exchange for money and despite a lack of documents.
In a sting operation whose findings it released today, Cobrapost.com reports that "from charges as low as Rs 500 to as high as Rs 2500, the ‘Aadhaar officers' agreed to make Aadhaar Cards for applicants without any proof of identification or proof of address."
"These are the same people who have been entrusted to securely collect and send the biometric and demographic data of an individual to UIDAI's data collection centre in Bangalore, Karnataka," the agency said.
As part of the sting operation officers were allegedly caught on camera telling the undercover journalist, who posed as an agent attempting to get Aadhaar cards for refugees from neightbouring countries, that documents could be arranged in exchange for money.
The sting operation exposed 12 cases where government officers were willing to make Aadhar cards for illegal immigrantS from Nepal and Bangladesh, with no documents.
The UIDAI hasn't made any official statement on the sting operation. more
