Action Request - Cleaning Files/Papers

All of us whether at offices or homes tend to keep papers and files which keep accumulating over a period of time.

Starting today till May 20th, we request every member of this circle to clean them up.

Clutter free workplace and home makes us feel better, is more productive and will be a contribution towards Swachh Bharat.

Do share picture and any best practices you mayhave on the subject.

The Tax department can ask for any details for last 8 years. How can one clean up. plus the fact that cases go on for years, sometimes for ones own lifetime. This has to be remedied. Dipak Himatsingka more

It would be very helpful if the Income Tax department would clarify as to how many years the files have to be kept. Once the Assessment Order comes then is it mandatory to keep files previous to that order ? In urban centres all of us have smaller spaces to keep files etc and clearing them out would free up storage space and reduce work of dusting etc. The fact that you can keep all your necessary documents in e storage is not well advertised & most people are unaware of this facility. Whenever documents are required by the government or other statuary bodies they can be accessed / submitted electronically. It there could be clear cut, well defined policies by the income tax, excise, education, health etc. departments then life would be so much easier for all. Plus no fear of degradation, damage, or theft of these documents. more
Dear All, I am 75 plus years old. My generation had known record keeping on paper. I admit that I am in the bad habit of keeping every paper in files. Till three years back I had a file containing salary slips from 1965 onward. I had Income Tax files for more than 40 years with me. It was only three years back when I learned that I need not hold I Tax return record for more that 6 years. In this foram I will request Experts to suggest what is the minimum paper record to be retained. Also, let IT experts suggest how to keep a soft copy of family photographs, important personal record. Similarly every must should have clear guidelines on keeping paper record. Allow me to state a joke.' An officer received orders to destroy all ten years old record. However, he was vary conscience type. He was not sure whether it is OK to destroy old record, even after orders from his senior. So he directed his juniors to destroy old record, subject to retaining a photo copy of old record. " more
Vernekar's comment is appropriate. though other two comments until now are good. The biggest trouble with us is we do expect others to do everything for us. We just speak, that is it. This is the attitude of us, us covers every Indian, resident Indians. We are still struggling to establish the beginning. We are waiting someone else to do it for us. more
