Action to be taken after expiry of life tax period for vehicles
we are paying life tax for personal vehicles. What is the action to be taken after expiry of life tax period. Heard there is a provision for extension of same on payment of Green Tax. In case owner decided to abandon the vehicle what steps to be taken? more

The procedures for abandon can be had from the web site of the Road Transport Authority. The procedures for extension of the registration are also available in the web site of the Road Transport Authority of the respective states. more

Is your vehicle still in working condition? If so, you can renew the registration by paying green tax, which is nominal. You can apply online and get an appointment for renewal. The list of documents to be submitted and fees to be paid are all listed online. Assume the registration has not expired yet. I got my car as well as my bike registration renewed through RTA. It was hassle free and am able to use both comfortably now. The extension will be given for a period of 5 years. You have to take your vehicle to RTA office for verification. If you want to stop using the vehicle, you can inform the RTA, surrender the registration and sell the vehicle to another or as scrap, depending on working condition. more

I could not find any MV Act 2018. There is one in 2017, but that does not talk about not registering old vehicles. So you might want to check with local RTA.

The registration of my vehicle of 2000 was extended for another 5 years by RTO, Kohima and on transfer to Chhattisgarh by RTO, Raipur on payment of stipulated road tax & other charges on production of current Pollution Test Certificate. more

I feel if the vehicle is proposed to be abandoned the vehicle, the same has to be done by intimation to the RTO and with surrender of Registration Certificate. The certificate from scrap dealer would also be required. more
