Medical Lab Malpractices – Key Root Causes

1. Lack of a Government regulation on pricing of the tests
2. There are no quality parameters set for the labs to adhere to
3. There is a nexus between Doctors and the labs
4. Lack of a law to prevent the Doctors from getting a cut back from the labs
5. Labs try to fool the people by claiming to do many tests in a small price and customers fall for it
6. Most of the labs are run as a business for pure profit
7. Some labs take advantage of the patient by charging them exorbitantly
8. Many labs try to make extra money by doing ultrasound for sex determination
9. A lenient approach is taken by the Doctor’s lobby against malpractices done by labs
10. We do not have enough centres to increase our skill development in field of pathology and radiology
11. Lack of initiative from the Government to convert their labs into modern ones
12. Lack of a Government agency to rate these labs

Medical Lab Malpractices – Key Issues

1. Labs increase charges very often
2. Government labs don’t have the latest equipment
3. They take too much time to deliver the reports
4. Many times mistakes are found in the reports
5. Labs pay hefty commission to doctors for referring them
6. Some tests in packages are not even done and a face reading is generated
7. Sink test (where samples are just thrown in sinks without diagnosis) do happen
8. Some labs are run like luxury hotels and charge exorbitantly
9. Some labs charge more than the Government prescribed rates for specific tests
10. Many labs do ultrasounds for sex determination illegally more

This information is very painful and shocking. Govt. should take it seriously. more
Labs lack on so many parameters: 1. Quality of Tests carried out. there are so many labs around GTB Hospital in GTB Enclaves Pkt-E & F and the LSC there. All lure the patients for cheaper Path Lab. They use forged doctors signature and what not. There has to be a check on these neem-hakim labs. 2. The calibration of machines is rarely done. Rather there is no laid out procedure. Labs get NABL, NABH and/or ISO certification. Yet to see a X-ray, C-SCAN lab with radition protection clearance. Procedure of calibration, PM & CM be laid out. 3. one Pathologist / Radiologist goes to many labs and they siugn the report made by some junior technician, without a closer check. 4. Labs offer discount to Corporate, CGHS patients and charge others heavily. No consideration of an Senior Citizens or Physically Handicapped. Rates shoulkd be fare and reasonable to all. 5. In advanced countries, path reports have Blood Group of patients written on the report to avoid mistaken ID. This will also help Hospitals to know the Blood Group in advance. more
We can not avoid evolving rigorous and clear 'Standards of practices' for laboratories and referrals. The shortcuts and circumvention will only muddle the issue not solve it. more
Dear Admin, there are so many agents working in & around the govt hospitals who misguide, impel or force psychologically to the patients to do the test from outside labs from they gets commission. I can avail you the footage of such exploiters with written proof. Are you ready to take action against such conspirators ??? more
PEOPLE WILL GET RELIEF FROM THE MALPRACTICES ONLY AND ONLY WHEN THE GOVERNMENTS COME OUT WITH THE FAIR RATE LIST FOR THE LAB TESTS, NOW THE LABS ARE CHARGING AT DOUBLE THE RATES AND CAN AFFORD TO PASS ON FIFTY PERCENT COMMISSION TO THE REFERRING DOCTORS. IF THEY CHARGE AT PROPER RATE, THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PASS ON MONEY TO THE DOCTORS. IN TURN THE DOCTORS WILL HAVE NO INTEREST IN ASKING FOR THE UNNECESSARY TESTS. ALREADY CGHS RATE LIST FOR ALL LAB CHARGES IS AVAILABLE AND DELHI GOVERNMENT HAS TO ADOPT IT AND ENFORCE IT. GOVERNMENT SHOULD ALSO COME UP WITH A LAW MAKING IT A CRIMINAL OFFENSE TO CHARGE MORE THAN THE PRESCRIBED RATES, FOR THE LAB. DOCTORS ASKING FOR SINK TESTS AND UNNECESSARY TESTS SHOULD ALSO BE PUNISHED. more
