I entirely agree with Dr. A K Maiti. The problem is of poverty, and will go away/reduce with poverty. One cannot expect a beggar, who is unsure of where his next meal will come from, to stop and think about where he defecates. For him it is a natural and pressing requirement, and he will just get over with it at his easiest convenience. more
People should be able to report (using mobile phone) how successful the public toilet programs are, how they are being maintained, how many people use it on the average, are there associated problems, etc. Government should have a mechanism to collect those data. That will help the government improve the plan in the next phase, also avoid scams as happened during the previous government. http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-11-12/news/56025882_1_building-toilets-swachh-bharat-mission-sulabh-international more
It is important that signage be placed in toilets stressing the importance of keeping it clean and dry for the next person who will use it. Attractive pictograms would be useful also signage in multiple languages. I know it sounds ridiculous, but the use of a monitoring system would be helpful in detecting nuisance makers. It is unbelievable how 'educated' and 'qualified' can be so messy in using the toilet, it is important that these people get a telling off and it would be a favor to them if we did so. more
One and only reason of open defection , they do not have toilet. Who does not have toilet? In city, like Mumbai, 50 % is slum and 2 % beggar. For them, nature (open defection) is the toilet. That is why it is called nature's call. Dr. A.K. Maiti, Ph.D. more
Open defection is a serious problem. The main reasons for this are unawareness of the people regarding hygiene and health hazards. So it is very much important to make people aware of the consequences. Lack of toilets, urinals in urban as well as rural areas is also responsible for this nuisance. This not only makes the area dirty, but also a shame for our country. Hence construction of toilets, urinals etc. in large scale is the need of the time. Also, keeping these facilities neat and clean is also important so that people do not hesitate to make use of them. more
