Air Quality in our Cities - Inputs on Solutions

Dear all:

Below are the key issues and root causes as outlined by you relating to poor air quality in our cities.

Kindly review them and help us identify solutions to them by responding to this post.

Once we know the solutions we will put together a comprehensive whitepaper for our leadership as well as share with other ministries that are stakeholders in this subject.

Clean air is key to Swachh Bharat!

Air quality in Indian cities – Issues and Root causes

1. Emission of smoke from vehicles
2. Smoking in public areas
3. Waste is burnt on roads by municipal workers
4. No cap on the number of car that hit the road every month/year
5. Usage of pesticide and DDT
6. Many industries still operating around residential areas
7. People are not aware the burning waste leads to the formation of many toxic gases
8. Too much dust on the roads
9. Uncovered construction sites
10. Municipal corporations do not cover the dug up roads
11. Lack of stringent pollution check norms
12. No strict law against creating pollution
13. Deforestation is a major cause
14. There is a massive increase in houses/ buildings
15. Lack of concentration on renewable sources of energy
16. Very old and unfit vehicles are still allowed on the roads
17. Increase in carbon footprint due to floating population in the cities
18. Adulterated fuel is sold at many petrol pumps
19. Construction materials are not stored properly
20. Factories on outskirts do not treat their generated air
21. Diesel Generators are very inefficient and cause fumes more

Car pooling is another solution to reducing air pollution. Use of public transport and car pooling can result in significant reduction in emissions. Use of public transport for commuting will not only reduce emissions but will also help decongest roads. A good and affordable network of public transportation is therefore required to encourage more and more people to use public transport more
The Simple Stove Curbing Climate Change in Africa http://news.yahoo.com/simple-stove-curbing-climate-change-africa-133130826.html Solar cookers are also very efficient and environmentally friendly. We should promote such useful technology. We spend so much in oil import, and trash research why not do something that makes sense. Wood and coal burning for cooking causes too much smoke. http://www.mapsofindia.com/my-india/india/what-kind-of-air-are-we-breathing-air-pollution-in-india http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_pollution_in_India more
If observed & analyzed the pollution is very less in the cities of the U.S.A, as Diesel is not abnormally used. The Solutions are to be based on Strict laws & controls on 1) Old vehicle petrol engines are not to be altered as diesel engines.2) Old vehicles beyond 15 years age are to be condemned. 3) The rate of Diesel sold to private cars is to be same as petrol.4) the factories are not strictly observing the standards on usage & change of filters/ pollution absorbents in chimneys more
A model is there given to me by my Bhagwan which can solve all these problems but I can not share it here I am ready to share it with our PM more
The only way to get good Air quality at anyplace is by planting trees on land and Mangroves along the coast - millions of trees, creating one lakhi-bagh and then a hundred more lakhi-baghs in every city and 100s of kms of mangroves along the coast. Yes, this will create jobs and prosperity will also set in. Now, how to get funds ? We need to use the KYOTO PROTOCOL, utilize 'carbon trading'. This is the only solution. So fully ARM an organisation (the forest deptt - make it 50 lakh stronger), which will plant trees, maintain them, get clean AIR to breath and earn money from carbon trading. more
