Air Quality in our Cities: Inputs Sought

Many of you who have given inputs on the air quality issues would be happy to know that many of them have been accepted by the Ministry of Environment, Finance Ministry and other stakeholders. However, a lot more is to be done to improve air quality in our cities as many of our Indian cities continue to be in WHOs most polluted cities list. With this post, we include your inputs from the past and seek what other solutions should be implemented by Central and State Governments to improve air quality.

Improving Air Quality in Indian Cities – Solutions

1. Vehicles not having a pollution-under-control certificate should be caught and challaned more effectively
2.Latest Euro/Bharat norms in vehicle manufacturing should be strictly adhered to
3.More by-passes should be created in large cities so that the commercial vehicles do not need to go inside the city to pass through
4.Use of CNG should be popularized
5. Vehicles more than 15 years old must be banned in all cities in India
6.Vehicles carrying cement/sand and waste should be completely covered and heavy a penalty should be imposed for non-compliance
7. Industries/factories should not be allowed to operate in or near residential areas
8. Stringent caps should be put on the chemical emissions during various industrial processes
9.Waste should be put in the Municipal dumps and should not be burnt on the roads. A fine should be imposed on burning the waste
10.Construction sites should be completely covered to prevent dust from spreading
11.Every state must have an accountable pollution regulatory body with powers to challan violators
12.The state pollution regulator must be on social media and respond to complaints within 72 hours
13.Focus should be increased on producing Solar and Wind energy instead of the continuous use of the non-renewable sources
14.Corporations and Municipalities should tender contracts for mechanised street cleaning in all the cities
15.Planting trees should an important concern to lower the pollution rate in the city
16.A steep fine should be imposed on smoking in public areas and if possible smoking must be banned more

What is happening on air pollution?? more
Adulteration, Pollution , cleanliness etc are the main reasons for the bad quality of air in the cities. All these areas are expected to be kept under control by various govt agencies by its staff. If any violation is happened in any area, the govt employee responsible for that may be given a advisory. If it is done again then Advisory no 2 and so on. There is a saying that if police are serious no thief can escape. Similarly here also more
1- Open garbage burning of trash, plastic material, discarded packing including paints and chemicals is observed to be very high . 2- two stroke engined vehicles of two and three wheelers must be stopped ,replaced by either electric or four stroke engined vehicles. 3- usage or adulteration of petrol, diesel with other solvents like kerosene are noticed in rural , semi rural areas must be banned . 4-Recycling of plastic to make new products is seen in All city outskirts must be banned. 5- Brick making kilns, bangle making small scale units ,Ipen hearth Dhabas, Marriage halls must be prohibited. 6- old street sprinklers on dusty streets by tankers as was seen in early 50s must be reintroduced Untill all roads are converted from earth to tar. 7- Imposing fines on residential colonies for obvious plastic garbage floating in the colony. more
Point 5 -> 5. Vehicles more than 15 years old must be banned in all cities in India . Is not helpful. more
Burning of all sorts of waste in every State should be banned. Public transport should be improved to discourage people from using private vehicles. All school/college students must use public transport. Entry of private vehicles in all educational institutions should be banned. The number of vehicles/family should be restricted to 2 max. No parking No vehicle rule should be made applicable in all cities. A powerful and accountable commission should implement all measures to control air pollution. The politicians should be kept away from this job as they always play vote bank politics. more
