ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD!

Adulteration of gold with cheaper metals and forgery of BIS Hallmark are some of the common methods adopted to dupe consumers.

Consumer Survey, carried out by Consumers India, as part of the study revealed that an overwhelming 86.8% are in support of mandatory hallmarking of gold and silver. Around 85.5% believe that hallmarking can reduce the number of frauds happening in gold and silver market

Needless to say, there is immediate need to make Hallmarking of Gold and Silver mandatory! Also, there is need to promote awareness regarding various aspects of Hallmarked Gold. The catch in Gold Hallmarking is the number which indicates the purity of gold. Even 9 carat gold can be hallmarked. Necessary safeguards have to be built in the new scheme of things to prevent incidents of consumers being passed on hallmarked jewellery of lower carat at the price of higher carat. more

As far as I understand, pure gold is extremely flexible and it is difficult to mould it into jewellery items. A harder metal like e.g. copper needs to be added. Even jewellers admit to that. In any case, now spectrometers are available with jewellers who read and tell their client the purity of gold in the jewellery items they sell. Even written printouts are provided. more
Yes, it is a fact that adulteration of gold with cheaper metals and forgery of BIS Hallmark are some of the common methods adopted to dupe consumers. The Dept of Consumer Affairs should frame rules to arrest such practice. more
It seems TANISHQ & GRT in Chennai is reasonable compare to other jewelleries . The resale value is Guaranteed. more
the precise manner of hallmarking including the purity must be displayed prominently in all jewelry shops so na customer is aware of the prcise Gold content in the jewelry at the time of purchasing itself more
Public awareness programme through advertisement has stopped totally which needs to be revamped immediately. Raids by BIS staff to check quality of gold being sold to be intensified. When majority of people would prefer to buy quality gold/silver, the Govt should take immediate action. more
