Anouncements in Railway Stations

I travel frequently in Indian Railways. The anouncements made in the stations are trilingual, namely Hindi, English and Tamil. An average person wonders what is the use of making announcments in Hindi, when there is no hindi speaking population in TN or does this mean, that railways takes care of an illiterate hindi speaking man, to be well informed and keep him at home when not in his home state. Does this mean that the Hindi Speaking population are 1st class citizens and railways takes special care to treat them well? Announcements should be need based and not policy based to be followed or implemented blindly. Railways need to be sensible to understand that one size does not fit all. more

Name of the stations are painted in square plates and fitted in the iron columns at some uniform height. As the trains enter the platforms at a speed of nearly 50 to 80 km/hr, it is difficult to read the name plates. Suggestions are given below: 1) Number of name plates may be increased. 2) The height at which they are fixed can be reduced. 3) Audio systems can also used for the purpose. Welcome the passengers while announcing the name of the station. At Madurai station, Tamil Nadu, it is being practiced. Dr.S.Ravindran more
Indians visit all parts of the country. Linkage of north and south are there. Kashi and Rameswaram for exe. Hence it is a must for 3 language formula more
Why north indians dont know english more
Local language in addition to the widely spoken languages , English and Hindi are being adopted for communication in Stations. I think this covers majority of traveling public . Don't think any change is called for. more
If an average person wonders what is the use of making announcements in Hindi, he will also wonder about the announcements in English. So, this is not an issue at all and he will not at all wonder and no special care to treat 1st class......... We should have some common sense and apply presence of mind about this kind of issues and / or any kind of issues. more
Yuvaraj jayaraman, tomorrow say you travel to Kolkata or say a place in North East and announcements are made only in Bengali or some local language , following your suggestion, in all probability, you may have to spend a long time waiting at the platforms. Please, India is a country of diverse languages. Let's not divide ourselves. Think of ways to unite this diverse population. Railways through their network is actually connecting this vast country. Jai Indian railways. more
