Anti Pollution Masks - Which and How

There are a variety of masks available and it can get difficult to choose the most appropriate one. They can be categorised on the basis of the number of times they can be used, how effective they are, and the intensity of filtration they provide.

N99 and N100 masks

These may be the most effective masks as they can filter PM 2.5 airborne particulate matter with up to 99 to 99.97 per cent efficiency. Available in various sizes, these masks can be used for a period of 5 to 6 months regularly. The N99 and N100 masks are also washable and foldable, which makes them convenient for use. If you suffer from any respiratory problems already, the N99 and N100 masks are recommended for you.

N95 respirators
N95 respirators are probably the most commonly used and affordable masks. They filter particulate matter PM 2.5 with at least 95 per cent efficiency. These masks can be used by people for prevention, hence, more sensitive groups should go for the N99 masks. These masks are also portable and can be folded and kept in your bag or even your pocket. However, one drawback of the N95 masks is that it cannot be used for a very long period of time, and can be used for only 2-3 days if used regularly. They are also not available in various sizes. Both the N99 and N95 masks do not filter oil-based pollutants.

P95 masks
The difference between a P and an N mask is that the P masks can also filter oil-based pollutants. However, the P masks may be very expensive, and also do not last very long in use. They can only be used for one day and need to be replaced after about 8-9 hours.

Here is the type of mask you need to buy

Make sure the mask has at least a 95 per cent filtration efficiency of 2.5 PM.
Ensure that the mask can be used for a few times, otherwise carrying it will not prove beneficial for you. If a mask loses its effectiveness after just a day's use, wearing it will not help in preventing health problems due to the toxic air.
Make sure that the mask fits you right and is the right size. For a mask to be effective, it should be the right size, or unfiltered air can enter your nose or mouth, leading to a risk of health diseases. more
