Are Indian project promoters lacking in confidence

It is now well known that pace of capacity creation in Indian industries is steadily declining, which seem to have now reached alarming level . This is more than evident from the fact that import level of several products have gone up substantially during the last few years.

The project promoters, start up entrepreneurs and economists have often blamed the government policies and global scenario for the problems faced by the Indian industry, However, careful study and analysis of ground realities would make it amply clear that the problems have not been caused by Government of India alone, which has initiated several pro active measures in recent years after extensive interaction and discussion with the industry representatives.

It is true that most of the Indian start up entrepreneurs do not have investment capability to set up large projects of globally competitive capacity. But, why look at such projects, when there are so many opportunities in projects of medium and small size, which can be readily seen by keeping the eyes and ears open.

Let us take the example of chemical industry

There are several commodity and speciality chemicals that do not require large investment and have steadily growing demand, which are being considerably imported at present .

Many of such projects can be taken up by start up entrepreneurs. Really, there is no constraint in setting up such speciality chemical projects from the point of view of their relevance to the national demand and growth in demand.

The problem is that Indian chemical industry is unable to set up several commodity and speciality chemical projects due to lack of technology and technical know how and with the international companies unwilling to provide technology for such commodity and speciality chemical projects at affordable price for the Indian chemical units.

In such circumstances, the only option for Indian chemical industry is to develop technologies for such projects by indigenous efforts, instead of looking for technology from abroad, which is being done from even small countries like Korea, Taiwan, Israel.

Lack of attention to the research and development needs and inability to achieve great results in research and innovation is the basic problem faced by the Indian chemical industry at present.

Why blame Government of India for this scenario ? Ministers and bureaucrats can provide policies and fund support for research and development work. The research and development work has to be necessarily carried out only by the industry players.

Indian start up entrepreneurs / project promoters have to look inward for all their problems and there is no need to look for scapegoat elsewhere.

It is obvious, that the confidence level of Indian start up entrepreneurs/ project promoters are low at present. Such confidence level is most important to forge ahead because the confidence can be self reinforcing. Unless the entrepreneurs build their confidence level which has to be accompanied by pride in developing domestic technology, the basic issue facing the Indian project promoters will remain unsolved.

Dear Mr.Venkataraman, you have taken up a good cause for the business but the thing is on the ground to set up physical businesses is greatly hindered by antiquated policies of the Govt. One most important thing is labour policy. Nobody wants to go into labor-oriented businesses because once you start & install expensive machinery, the labour starts taking upper hand because they know you are stuck and they dictate you terms. Also , the political mafia Raj start extortion racket and there is no law & order, nobody will protect you and you are left to get stewed in your own soup. I am 70 years old, an Engineer and an entrepreneur. I have burnt my fingers so badly that I had to close down my 2 Cr. export turnover business in 1996 and go back to service. I have got a total solution for this country as a whole, are you interested? Looking into the problems of any specific sector will not help, if we need people's participation in the whole development process, the whole Govt. machinery and its working has to be thoroughly recast in the present level of technology. Please ask any political party if they have any exhaustive blueprint for the development of the country as a whole, I doubt anybody will be able to present one. 20 point / 100 point programme Election manifestos are of no use. There was a big opportunity for the present govt. to make path-breaking changes because of their majority, and actually there was lot of expectation from masses. But they have squandered that opportunity because of their myopic vision of gathering political power all over India and fill up their personal pockets in the DIGITAL way and only distribute JUMLAS for public consumption. Finally, given an option today no sensible & honest person will be interested to go into business by investing his own money in India. India never was and even today is not a place for honest business. To succeed you must be a crook first and ready to break and if possible bend rules with political tie-up. In India, nobody has got time & money to invest in R&D and as a nation we are more interested in COPY & PASTE. Don't talk of real innovation in India, only JUGAD and with that you can't build world class enterprises. more
100% correct. R&D is totally neglected. From the very beginning. We have been so conditioned to beg for technologies, that we have forgotton who we are, or, what our capablities are! No, I am not talking the spiritual subject of 'who every individual is', but about every individual's capacity, without any reference to the 'so called educational qualification'. more
Only fly-by-night businesses with political backing & institutional supply of funds can have the confidence because for them there is no personal stake involved. What you think is the reason behind NPAs of PSBs? more
