ARE PLANTS PLANTED TO WHITHER AWAY ?

Hundreds of plants have been planted in Besant Nagar, Indira Nagar and other areas in Adyar neighbourhood which I have seen. All the plants have been provided with iron enclosure with a wooden pole to support the plants as they grow. Thousands of such plants must have been planted by Chennai Corporation all over Chennai city ,with the expectation that they would provide green cover to the city before long. Crores of rupees must have been spent in this tree planting venture.

Now, seeing the condition of the plants, it appears to be a case of operation success and patient died.

As the plants are not being watered regularly , most of them have whithered away or in the process of whithering away ,about which Chennai corporation and the Tamil Nadu government do not seem to be be concerned, though the government money has been spent.

A few decades back, I participated in a Vanamahotsava function ( tree planting function) in Ooty that was presided over by Dr. C.P.Ramaswamy Iyer, the well known scholar of great eminence. Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Iyer planted a tree as part of the vanamahotsava function and then said that he planted a tree in the earlier year. Then, he turned to the organisers of the function and asked them where was that location. The organisers said “Same place , Sir”

It is sad that while the government and Chennai corporation take efforts to plant such trees by engaging the services of contractors and the authorities must have expected them to water the trees regularly until they grow up. I do not know what is the terms of contract.

It would have been an ideal arrangement if the authorities have requested the local and interested residents to maintain the trees properly and look after them on voluntary basis. Many citizens would have come forward, as there is a general belief that watering and maintaining plant is like worshipping God apart from other positive factors. As an incentive and to enthuse the people,, the authorities could permit them to exhibit their names or dedicate the trees to the memory of the dear and near ones ,which can be prominetly seen by passers by.

Then, it would be a matter of pride for those responsible for the maintenance of the trees ..Thus ,efforts to promote the greenery would be successful and fruitful.

I sent such suggestion to the concerned authorizes a few months back but my letter was not even acknowledged.
I only hope that the authorities will take note of the suggestion, when it would appear in the media.

Contrary to TN in Bengaluru tree plantation is full swing. Bengaluru Metropolitan do not permit felling of trees unless new plants ate plnted elsewhere. In each housing colony that spring up anew it is mandatory to br greenary.People at the helm of affairs in the Government forst they should realse the need for GREENARY around us. more
In Bangalore also, trees are being felled at the whims and fancies of the citizens, especially for demolishing single houses which have one or more trees, trees growing near houses, temples etc. (A big tree was cut a couple of days back by the side of a temple - reason - obstructing the temple !!). And planting trees on pavement and road dividers is not a replacement. They just do not grow in concrete. more
