This is serious! I appreciate what FSSAI suggests in its guidelines for potable water. But how do eliminate ground water contamination and its filtering into the food that we eat. more  

@FSSAI India - while one can to some level ensure that the vegetables are washed with the specified quality of water, it is nearly impossible to regulate what kind of water farmers across the state are using for irrigation purposes. And given the quality of life in Bihar, I don't think that the argument made by you above is very valid either. Also, the contaminated water must be used for something and must be going somewhere in the system, and it is quite likely that the arsenic will eventually circle around thus ending up in the water we use for daily purposes. I hence urge you to investigate the matter in more detail and take appropriate action. Thank You. more  

Fluoridation of drinking water used successfully in the U.S. (for dental health) caused enamel fluorosis (white spots) on teeth in children under six years. A study conducted in India showed that a number of packed snacks, churans, Pickles, masalas, salad dressings, soups, juices etc. contained rock salt (black salt) a good source of fluride. Many tooth pastes, mouth washes, dental products; canned fish, fruit juices use fluoride as preservative. Long term treatment with anti-depressants, anti-cholesterol drugs can also lead to fluorosis. It was also observed in children that treatment of anemia through dietary correction failed as fluorosis flattened the intestinal villi. Heavy worm infestation too interfered with absorption of iron, folic acid supplements. Low fluoride water and adequate diet supplements reverse fluorosis effectively. more  

Dear Mr Bharat Lal, FSSAI has referred IS 10500 specification for potable water in its regulation. The same potable water shall be used as an ingredient and for washing and handling raw vegetable and fruits. more
