Availability of Medicine at Airport

Recently I was at Kolkata Airport & had a medical emergency due to food poisoning after eating at one of the eatery. To my utter surprise , I could not locate a single medical shop or counter & airline staff expressed their inability to call back checked in baggage. Anyway they were kind enough to guide me to the process of checking out of security area (that too after getting grilled by the security) to an Apollo Pharmacy Counter at Check In hall .

I was told by the pharmacy person there have been numerous request by the travelers as well as pharmacies to open a counter near boarding gates but it didnt get through for security reasons that medicines include liquids/jels.

For the first time I started thinking on this as to what if somebody gets in to a serious emergency like cardiac, epilepsy or so which may need immediate medical drug.

How can this be taken forward to -either open counters of reputed medical pharmacy chains like Apollo, or arrange kind of dial a medicine where pharmacist can deliver to airport, or CISF or any security can arrange their own pharmacy/ doctor for emergency.

Your views please.

I think it is a case of communication gap. Being an ex- Airports Authority of India ( AAI) staff officer, I wish to inform all Circle members that there is a round the clock Doctor on duty at Calcutta airport. It is unfortunate that Airline staff was unaware of it and did not guide Mr Shanbhag to Duty Doctor at the airport. Dear Shri Gangadhar Shanbhag, please check this fact with AAI Duty Manger on your next trip by air. more
Yes, provision for medicine should be there in airports and railway stations. more
Govt. must ensure that all the public places like Airport, Bus stand , Rly platform etc. must have the medicine shop and an attendant to take care of first aid/ emergency aid. It is indeed surprising that Airport do not maintain this must facility. All the air carriers too have the emergency kit, they simply refuse for a pain killer. Aviation ministry must note, it is terrible. more
