Background checks : Improvement required
How is a landlord for example to know if his tenant is a mass murderer or a thief? How is a bank to know if a person is a fraud or is in the red with another bank? How is an employer supposed to know if the candidate is a sexual offender. for e.g cab companies?
Today we are endangering our citizens with false background check reports and shady details. We need to tighten our systems and processes to keep our citizens safe.
Unlike abroad where data is logged into a common database accessible to all law enforcement, in India we still do things manually.
Some issues :
- Police stations are not online
- Police stations do not want to log in complaints in order to deflate the number of crimes in their area
- Minor crimes are not registered at all
- Background checks are a money making enterprise - a nexus between the police and the background check companies.
It is time to bring India on par with other countries in tracking crime by having a common database.
Some suggestions :
- Background checks should be centrally managed.
- Background checks should be done online and payment should be made online. This will remove the middlemen and the corruption
- All crimes should be captured online and paper / hard copy FIRs and complaint records should be done away with.
It is only when all of us put our heads together can we expect to find a solution to a problem that affects every citizen in this country. more
