Ban of selling chewing Tobacco by Delhi Government.

I congratulate the Delhi Govt. for banning the sale of chewing tobacco for the reason of its harmful effects on human beings.

This certainly is a very positive step and the first step though ideally the very production of chewing tobacco ought to have been banned.

This is a good step because it is going to restrain the purchase by possible consumer.

Often than never, as it is in the case of cigarette smoking where the smoker is penalized with high and continuously increasing price of cigarette products, it is the consumer who gets penalized.

The Tobacco grower is not penalized because the Govt. needs the revenue from Tobacco sales which will not be possible if tobacco growing is banned.

The Manufacturers of chewing tobacco or smoking tobacco are not penalized as the Govt. needs the revenue from these manufacturers.

The Distributors, dealers or retail sellers are not penalized because they have to earn their profit on their investments.

The end consumer who pays through his nose for consuming these tobacco products even at the cost of family budgets , gets penalized because he is consuming not considering that it is this consumer who is the reason the Govt. is gaining its revenue, it is this consumer who is the reason the Manufactures if gaining profits on his investment, it is this consumer who is the reason that the Distributor/dealer/retailer is gaining their profits on their investment.

POOR CONSUMER ALWAYS FINDS HIMSELF AT THE RECEIVING END FOR WHICH HE HAS ALREADY PAID THROUGH HIS NOSE.

In the light of the above discussion, the Delhi Govt.'s initiative to ban the sales of chewing tobacco is a very positive step as the consumer's venture of depleting his pocket, health and family budget is put to a check.

The consumer is not a sinner if the Govt. is really concerned about the safety, health of the citizen and their family when the very roots from growing tobacco, manufacturing, marketing & selling is not curtailed.

CONGRATULATIONS DELHI GOVERNMENT more

Promulgating a ban order, by itself does not really curtail the menace. It has been medically accepted and proven that tobacco chewing or smoking is harmful to human life. So is the case with consumption of alcoholic drinks (except the medicinal grade alcohol). This is where the quantity and quality aspects come into the picture. No Govt. took public opinion or advise or suggestions when a penalty has been imposed on cigarette smoking and this penalty is being implemented by the police against the so called offenders who smoke in public places. Not only the police are taking action (ofcourse they do so when it suits them), even the public strongly protest, object to someone who smokes. The question is why should a consumer who has rightly paid for the product in cash be punished for consuming. If such penalty has to be imposed on the consumption, then why the sellers, manufacturers and growers of tobacco & tobacco products should not be banned or penalty imposed? If the Political and Govt. bodies are really concerned for the general health and depleting family budgets on tobacco products, then the very roots such as the tobacco farming, tobacco manufacturing and tobacco product selling should be banned by imposing penal laws for violation and a consumer is not an offender who is being targeted with penal action. However, the most important and valid factor is the true implementation of such laws without favor or fear that can really make a mark and not just promulgating a ban or law. In the absence of implementation of the true spirit and word of the law, as Mr. Virmani apprehended, such a ban or law can only brood more black money and actually increase the consumption rather than preventing it. more
Can such a ban (do we know its proper definition and conditions?) help eradicate the problem it is meant to? Is chewing of tobacco related qualitatively and quantitatively to human health? Is banning sale of the product the only solution? Ban on sale/consumption of liquor is known to have been withdrawn. Heavy penalties on traffic transgressions are known to have been mildened. Raises in travel tariffs are known to have been withdrawn under public pressure. So, I really ask myself the question: are such steps given proper and thorough thought before "applying" these on the public in general? Food for thought! more
If it is really a ban need to be welcomed. Few years back Haryana banned sale of alcohol. The consumption might had increased due to unofficial way of availability and ultimately sale was reopened. I wish Delhi Govt would really implement the ban order else it would remain as another source of corrupt money. more
Good of u to appreciate public endeavour!! We need to create adequate and sustained public opinion thru appropriate education and awareness programmes on a long term basis for the ban to percolate finally into personal and individual preference!!! more
