Behaviour of a child

I am presenting the problem of my grandson for suggestions or advice. My grandson is aged 8 years andfamily consists of father mother and younger sister . aged 3. Myself and wife are also with them. He was brilliant up to the age of 5.
For the last 3years he is becoming less and less brilliant and more and more fearful, less interested in studies
He is afraid, as against common boys, of normal things like igniting fire works, riding bicycle and can't deal with small issues with friends and classmates and start to weep suddenly.
Since his parents are both employed we grandparents are taking more care in him and try to make him happy and brilliant. In study also he is going backward.
I may state that his maternal family members are submissive in nature having lack of initiatives, absent minded and fearful to take up new steps in daily life.
Can anybody help me to analyse the problem and suggest any medication or psychological steps to deal with the problem. more

Looking at the tender age of the child, and keeping in mind that he has his whole life in front of him, it may be advisable to take professional help rather than consulting friends. The source of his fear has to be detected and steps for its eradication. Do not depend upon laymen like us. more
