Benchmarking Foreign Train Networks

The Railway Kaya Kalp council under the guidance of Ratan Tata has embarked on an exercise to benchmark 4 railway systems i.e. USA, Germany, China and Russia.

While this exercise is conducted, in parallel, we would like to seek your inputs on the best practices you have observed in the train networks around the world.

We would especially like to seek inputs from the NRI/Expat members in the circle and anyone who has used these train networks abroad.

We look forward to your inputs. more

The news of 18th June 2015 about bursting IIR tower at Itarsi station is neither new or surprising. Such accidents are obvious and may be expected to occur time and again. This is not negative approach. It is to wake railway officers and higher ups. In one of the earlier post, I had praised British rule for marking life of each damageable items used in public service. Whether it is loco shed or bogie or ladders on which rails are laid. Each of these and addition in more than 160 years of progress. It should be made mandatory for officials to see that repairs / replacements are done in time. I believe the compensation given is far more than what can be spent for checking items from time to time. Why do not railway reserve 1% of its budget for repair / renovation /replacement work. May be one independent agency duly formed from within railways is given this work. I share the best practice of South Korea network. The main motto of their is every person should reach to their destination at the earliest. There are no. Of Bullet trains running at 300km/ hr and the frequency is also more. Only their beauty is they add or delete the coach as per the booking of passengers. In bullet train all passengers are reserved. In general trains there is space to seat for all passengers. The timings are perfect. They not allowed any passengers to enter to the platform till 10 minutes before the train arrival time.hence all the platforms are remain clean and neat but all passengers are also discipline and the infrastructures are there for any garbage more than required so never over flowing like in India. There is lot of space and the shops of different varieties at either underground or above railway station for passengers so they also generate revenue with facilities for passenger to provide the to buy their requirements. They have the tourist pass systems for tourism to developed for foreigners and the locals to use this as per their requirements.you can book online and validate at railway station. The reservation on the trains whether bullet train of slower train is free and as many time as you can change without any charges one day before the train departure time because of their system of adding coach or reducing the coach as per passenger traffic. The frequency of trains are almost every 10 -15 minutes during peak hours. Internal of the train cleanliness are extremely good and there are railway employees who are very much helpful to passengers who can even help to move your luggage also. There is no coolie at any railway station. more
There is no quest for excellence in railways. Mediocre is the superlative in Railways. The mindset has to change. Railway employees must be given encouragement and incentive to put forward suggestions for improvement of their work. This can either be done on individual basis or on the basis of groups of employees. If suggestions are accepted the same person or group must be given the task of implementing it and they must also be rewarded.Railway employees must be motivated to bring in change in their working style and in their attitude towards work. They should be given reason to take pride in a good work done which will prevent them from doing shoddy work which is quite prevalent now. They should be made to shun old mentality and look forward to the "new". The government of India had outsourced the vetting of passport applications and job of advising passport applicants to, if I remember right, Tata Consultancy Service. That has brought a remarkable change in in the process of passport application. There is less crowd in passport offices and more transparency. Can Railways allocate a section in major railway stations where an outsourced agency, against a token amount of Rs.10/-, advise passengers on the train routes, seat availability etc ? This can be in addition to the regular inquiry counters manned by railway employees. more
Amtrak Railway systems in USA are nothing great, wonder why the Railways are not benchmarking with SNCF France or JR Japan which are the best more
