BEYOND TEACHING & LEARNING :
Readers may wonder what this post is doing in Swachh Bharat. When one goes through the columns kitchen Gardens raised by schools with the help of students will come to know the relevance .
The first and most interesting activity Emerging out of this Initiative is converting “ waste to wealth.” The school has a free midday meal program for the students . So the biodegradable waste such as vegetable & fruit peals from the kitchen are composted. The same is used for their kitchen Garden and being self sufficient. From the picture we come to know it is the lower class students who have been involved. The kitchen Garden supplies vegetable and greens for 2 day in a week. That is 40% of vegetable consumption in the kitchen.
From the picture you see the students are from the most ideal age group , the lower classes whose minds are yet open to learn new concepts and will go back from school to homes or society and make this a habit in their lives. Straight away a Brigade is formed that will be conscious of “ Waste to wealth “ .
Their influence on their own house hold and neighbour hood will take the nation a long way in “Garbage management “ .
The most important lesson they learn is GARBAGE SEGREGATION
* This reported Initiative is in Chennai city where there is open space crunch. With the limited space the Head Mistresses and the co operating staff have used their imagination and innovation utilize the little available place to produce .
* It should be more rewarding in schools situated in the villages if they start such initiative along with water conservation.
* Why not Schools functioning even from Multi storey buildings it is possible . There are many terrace Gardens promoted by the Government Agriculture and Horticultural departments that will give free consultations and assistance to develop . Here all one needs is Sunlight and water.
* Most schools have canteen and kitchen . All schools generate Garbage of different types.
SCHOOLS ARE THE BEST PLACES TO TEACH GARBAGE SEGREGATION . LET US ENCOURAGE THE SCHOOLS IN OUR NEIGHBOUR HOOD TO START GARBAGE SEGREGATION.
I am also looking for ideas to pass on the information and put to use in the school in my village situated in a remote corner. more
