Big Bazaar or Hyper City forcing customer

Recently I went to hypercity to purchase my monthly household items. At billing once whole billing was done the teller said I cant proceed forward till you give me your phone number. It is mandatory now. I said I wont give it because i dont want sms from you. He said then you cant check out. I had already spent 40 minutes with family shopping and had no option but felt terrible that guys like Kishore Biyani are resorting to such cheap tactics.

Will consumer afffairs take note of this and do something. Or may be TRAI should book these fellows. more

It all happens because of change in buyer seller relations. Earlier we bought from owner of the small shop . but now The owner is some where and his workers are selling hear. Therefore no buyer seller relation. Owner may bend some rules for some customers to retain him but the workers do not have such idea to retain as they are paid salaries . I feel that giving mobile number must be optional. A seller can/should not force the buyer to give his personal details. We may cheat by giving wrong number or we may tolerate their messages is different issue. But basically they can demand payment only not details of customers. If we give, one mistake and lifelong suffering with unwanted calls and messages. more
The telephone number should not be made mandatory. The companies share the telephone number for telemarketing. more
This is a non issue, as we can always give a fake number. A retailer has to collect this data to track customer spending and tailor suitable offers for them. Spam calls and messages can always be blocked. When you share your mobile number willingly with your bank and mutual fund brokers it will be misused much more than a retailer more
Sudeshji, we Indians are very used to buying everything from Kiryana/small store, pay cash & never bother about a Bill !! Believe me I am also exactly the same type !! However, with advent of Bills/Invoices & GST, it is compulsory for the Seller to write the name of the Buyer .. and the easiest way to do this is our Unique Phone No. rather than our Name & Address !! Kishore Biyani etc. are not doing anything illegal here !! Besides, tell me what is wrong in getting some advertising from regular Sellers we visit .. What irritates me is the Blind Ones selling Credit Cards/Houses/Loans/Insurance/Health Checkups/Mutual Funds/Houses+Flats/etc. If you are so fed up of even these, block them on like Hari says above !! more
All departmental stores like big bazar or more ask for our phone number. Even medical shops also started asking for phone number. My stock reply is I do not have a phone number. My question is one need not have a phone to buy in a shop. If phone numbers are recorded in the bill at the year end Income Tax department can get information of spending by that particular customer. This will also help the shop keeper to know who are all his frequent customers. This is the evil we are inviting by adopting to digital technology. Let us bear and enjoy it. more
Sir, I doubt income tax dept has the wherewithal to scrutinise such huge no of bills manually, since the soft copies of bills of each shopkeeper are in different formats and may not even be forwarded to it dept. more
An honest citizen should not have problem, because income tax department getting information about one's spending, if it is for other reasons it is understandable. more
