BIO FORTIFICATIONOF FOOD GRAINS :
Food fortification had to be started after Green Revolution of the 1960’s ; as there was famine and food grain shortage in the earlier part of the 20th Century . This was slowly and steadily thwarted by the Government in 60’s by the Green revolution using Chemical fertilizers and pesticides. That was done on a war footing basis and met with success.
Effects :
* Citizens had sufficient food grains to give Calories .
* Besides food and Calories people also needed Micronutrients like Vitamins and minerals . That was lacking in the mass produced grains.
* This resulted in severe deficiencies among the public, a mater of concern. This was not restricted to the under privileged alone and affordability was not the criteria ; but the affordable sections with unhealthy life style also suffered - Naaznin husein , Indian Dietetic Association.
* Further we don’t consume whole grains and Millets . The processed ones ,polished ones takes away the germ and the essential nutrients.

Bio fortification is the step taken after a decade of research in India. It can provide 100% R.D.A. [Required daily allowance .] of the micro nutrients particularly iron followed by others . There will be no more need to fortify the Foods. Though it is not available today in the next 5 years it should be available says Dr. Govindaraj. more
