Biogas- the 'quiet monster' : turning industrial, municipal and farm waste into income

More attention has been on liquid fuels that the potential that biogas fueling can make remains hidden.

The raw material to convert is huge and untapped. The opportunity to harness fuels from industrial, agriculture and municipal waste is powerful. Huge opportunity exists in biogas and to exploit the biomass potential - thus its essential to install assets for anaerobic digestion (ADs).

Asset owners are simply flaring gas or using it in inefficient power generation or boiler operations. Biogas holders give an opportunity to store the gas with reduced/no leakage potential.

Biogas provides the advantage of waste residue to bring higher value, create jobs and a greater tax base and GDP growth.

There could also be other reasons for asset owners. To mitigate odor, for example, which affects quality of life. AD is also a way to control pathogens, for example, before land applying manure as fertilizer. Also nutrient management, ADs can have a positive impact on soil quality and nutrient management. There is a whole lot of drivers that all promote the use. Odor, nutrient, pathogen, a more sustainable way for agriculture - all of these outcomes are unexpected benefits for the push for renewable fuels.

Electric vehicles (EVs) can also figure here. One can use electricity from biogas to power electric vehicles ( if that's better with CNG, great). In 2020, we might see re-birth of EVs.It could become part of a customer's lifestyle statement. Despite the Indian automotive industry experiencing a sharp decline in FY19, the EV market is expected to continue to grow in coming years. With BS-VI (emission) norms becoming applicable somewhere in 2020, EVs may turn more price-competitive with conventionally fuelled vehicles, thus accelerating their sales. more

Bio-fuels can potentially double farm incomes. Very detailed scope through scientifically utilising bio-waste, as detailed in the note above. Anaerobic digestion, further synergising with electricity generation and the list goes on. True, SATAT scheme for sustainability cum affordability. Make asset owners prosumers. more
Various Loan schemes are available for biogas plants. For example, SATAT scheme (initiative of MoPNG) of CBG(compressed bio gas) encourages entrepreneurs to set up CBG plants, produce CBG and sell it to OMCs( Oil Marketing Companies) for sale as automotive and industrial fuels. more
Burning biomass is wasteful. Better use technology which yields compost as well. Our farmers may be made stakeholders in harvesting farm waste. Forex earnings, import substitution, circular economy and to assist in net zero emissions. https://www.dailypioneer.com/2023/business/govt-makes-biogas-blending-mandatory.html more
