Book a ticket early, get the most uncomfortable seat
the few times that I have booked tickets by Bangalore-chennai Shatabdi, I get the ticket in the center of the coach (with the tray table between the opposite seats). This is the most uncomfortable seat in Shatabdi. And the number of tickets available while booking was more than 500. And when I book nearing my date of travel, I get a good seat. Logically speaking, the earlier you book, the better seat you get (Agree that there needs to be a coach balancing done, but not with 500 available tickets) Not in this case. Whoever thought of the algorithm for seat allocation seems to have defied logic. more
A good observation by Mr. Padmanabhan .You must also be a frequent traveller as I am in this section. THERE ARE 10 SEATS IN THE CENTER OF THE COACH 4 AND 6 ON EACH SIDE . THERE ARE SO MANY WHO TRAVEL IN 4's AND 6's AS FAMILY OR FRIENDS . CAN'T THERE BE SOME SORT OF INNOVATION OR CONSIDERATIONS FOR SUCH TO BE TOGETHER HAVE THEIR MEAL & CHAT TOGETHER ? When I book for Groups of Tourists I book at the counter and request as far as possible to be given in the Center even in 2 compartments so that the group and their Baggage can stay together . So for the benefit of Travellers like Padmanabhan and many others , who prefer not to be in the Center and book on line , there can be an option no center seat please . When IRCTC / Indian Railways keeps aside 10% of seats for Thaatkal and another for V.I.P. Quota with positive approach to get filled up, why not try out the same approach towards these customers also. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO ALLOCATE EXACTLY THE CENTER SEATS FOR PASSENGERS TRAVELLING IN 2's , BUT START FROM THE NEXT ROWS TO THE CENTER ONES SO THAT COACH BALANCING CAN STILL BE MAINTAINED . more
One thing about Shatabdi trains is that it is anti-Delhi. Both departure and arrival times for New Delhi is uncomfortable and odd. Departure time from Delhi should be between 8&10 am, likewise next day Shatabdi should leave from the other side between 8&10 am. The concept of same train (coaches) returning same day is peculiar. Seats do not lean back enough like aircraft ones, and consequently make passengers tired after one hour's journey. Shatabdi fares are on very high side. The Railways should think about comforts of passengers instead of saving by not making more coaches. Two Shatabdis (inward/outward) should run on the same route same day. more
Mr Rajgopalan is right. We Indians are very well educated but we are easily carried away by fundas thrown by Railways etc. It is a bullshit argument to say that IRCTC follows a good algorithm. They look into weight concept for allotment of berths. It is totally wrong. No train, even the passenger trains are moving in vacant condition. The IRCTC should present all the seats vacant at the time of booking and allow customers to choose the seat. Then only, the money should be deducted. All cock and bull stories in the name of Technology or Algorithm are for people in Western world. India is a populace country and all travelling avenues are always over crowded. more
