In atta bread category, energy claim was highest in English Oven (266 kcal per 100 gm) and lowest in bonn (234 kcal per 100 gm).
Among white-bread brands, highest protein was declared in bonn (8.50 gm in 100 gm). It was lowest in City Fresh and Topsin (6.57 gm in 100 gm).
Among atta brands, protein claim was highest in Perfect (9.20 gm in 100 gm) and lowest in English Oven (7.93 gm in 100 gm).
Declaration of dietary fibre on the label is not mandatory. None of the white-bread brands have declared dietary fibre on their labels. Among the atta brands, only bonn did not declare dietary fibre on the label. Comparing the ones that declared, dietary fibre was highest in Harvest Gold (6.20 gm in 100 gm) and lowest in English Oven (2.33 gm in 100 gm).
For manufacturers claiming on the label that the bread contains atta, declaration of atta percentage in ingredients list is mandatory. It may be noted that a wide variation in atta percentage declaration was noticed among the tested brands. For example, English Oven declared only 5 per cent atta and Harvest Gold as much as 51 per cent. more
