British Raj Rly bungalow peon system to continue, with changes
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged Railways to consider abolishing the practice in favour of officers taking an allowance. Thereafter, a committee was formed to work out a way forward.
BUNGALOW PEONS will continue in Railways, albeit in a new avatar, according to a fresh order issued by the Railway ministry on Monday. After reviewing the 100-year old practice, the Railway Board has decided that while fresh bungalow peons, usually engaged by officers as per their wishes, will not be recruited, the ones working will continue to work at officers’ homes and vacant posts of bungalow peons will be filled from the existing pool.
This shows that how difficult it is even for PM to change 100 year old British Raj systems. Railways are incurring a huge amount of public money in providing this facility.
Why railway officers can not employ the domestic helpers themselves and pay them like every citizen does.

First try to remove the perks of police officers. A footman is attached to an IPS probationer under training. In Rlys. people who reach jt. secy level postings are allowed bungalow peons. What bout the personal staff attached to MLAs, MPs and their perks? Why are they allowed to travel with a "companion" now when earlier they were allowed to travel with only spouse? more

What PM will do it alone ? If You change the system you need to change attitude . If You do not have then what PM or President will do ? This System is run by bureaucrat & PM this is the work of the Concern Dept. Minister . The Free Facility enjoyment who will leave so easily? The Rule or Restrictions came from Dept. Heads / Babus & If they Decide Non Co operation / delaying in file / proposal then what PM Will do ? Indians will not improve unless they put behind Bar / Put heavy Fine etc. more

I agree with the spirit of the post. However, we should also see the practical aspect of the maintenance of such large sized bungalows. No one can honestly engage helps to maintain the same from his limited salary and carry home pay. Either we should stop practice of bungalow accommodation, and shift to easily maintainable flat system economically or allow some maintenance facility at employer cost. Now a days private service providers are available to provide such facilities. A number of private sector corporations also support their management level executives with such facilities. more

At one end the government says that they will remove unnecessary job profiles and ask the government companies like IR to abolish such system. On other hand the government itself through these very companies boast that they will provide employments to lakhs of people. How can they do both. They have to have proper mechanism or else the people getting sacked form institutions like these will add to the number of unemployed people. more
