Bugs/Insects and Pests in Trains - Root Causes
1. Floors and bogies are not cleaned properly
2. No supervision of the cleaning staff
3. Cleanliness standards set for the railway employees to follow are very low
4. Lack of accountability of cleaning staff
5. The sense of cleanliness among the general public is missing
6. Quality of pest control products used is not up to the mark
7. Passengers keep throwing/dropping eatables inside the trains which attracts insects
8. Not enough dustbins on the stations and inside the train
9. Beddings are old and are not washed properly
10. Food is kept on the floor inside and outside the pantry car
11. A large number of people use the toilets and hence keeping them clean becomes a task
12. Bins are not cleared regularly which attracts more insects

1. Cockroaches and rats can be found everywhere in the train
2. Both general and AC coaches smell of rodents
3. Pest control companies who are given the contracts do not do a good job
4. Bed bugs in pillows and blankets provided
5. The pantry car is dirty and has insects running all around
6. Insects being found in the food in the train is a common sight
7. The quality of wood and fabric used attracts bugs
8. Lot of mosquitoes in AC compartments
9. Toilets are full of insects more

Travelled from Pune to Amravati in 2nd A/c. in Sept, end 2014. There were bed bugs. Infact the entire coach was full of bed bugs. The bed bugs entered my luggage and all passengers . So the Indian Railways are really a great national carrier for pests and insects, bugs who go to peoples' homes and then the amount of time and energy we passengers take to get rid of them. !!! I complained to Indian railway site and I don't think it matters anything to Railway officials. THIS BJP GOVERNMENT OR ANY GOVERNMENT WILL AT THE MOST TAKE EFFORT TO DO SOMETHING, BUT WITH PRIVATE CONTRACTORS AND RAILWAY OFFICIALS AND CORRUPTION ALL THE WAY , NOTHING MUCH CAN HAPPEN... RAILWAY UNIONS AND STAFF... AND THE MESS MADE IN SO MANY YEARS OF DIRTY CONGRESS GOVERNMENT , IT WILL BE A DREAM FOR INDIANS TO BE HAVING A RAILWAY OF EFFICIENCY, CLEANLINESS AND PASSENGER SATISFACTION. Sometimes even in First class or A.C classes, the toilets are stinky,no water supply,hand wash liquid jars are empty etc. I have experienced this many time even in Shatabdhi express and two tier A.C coaches between Bangalore and Chennai. more

Spraying to be done as a rule after completion of journey and also before departure. Staff to be trained to keep the bogies clean. Passengers to be educated regarding cleanliness via TV presentation at all Railway Stations. Sheet to be pasted in front of Toilets in each bogey to control the cleanliness by railway staff. This sheet to be checked on random basis at major stations. Passengers to be fined in case they dirty their seats while traveling. This should be strictly followed. Warning note need to be put in each bogey in this regard. Railway official in plainclothes should move to check any passenger spitting or spoiling cleanliness and spot fines minimum Rs 500.00 to be introduced. more

attitude of both cleaning staff and passenges to be changed through programs to educate. responsibility of cleanliness to be entrusted to the respective staff and any feed back from passengers to be taken seriously. most of the issues of cleanliness and insect menase is complimentary so to be tackled together more
