I moved to Velappanchavadi area very recently from Adyar. Everyday near Saveetha Dental college (opposite to flyover) a lot of garbage is being burned. This includes everything from paper to plastic and other materials. Not only does it cause a lot of blinding smoke for commuting people but also poses a very dangerous health hazard to public inhaling this smoke. Many people get sick as they are left with no other travel route. Also there is a lot of garbage lying around in this area making this a dump yard for everyone from local public to area vendors/shop owners/butchers. All of these could be easily avoided by just sending garbage trucks everyday to clear them just like how it happens inside city limits and having a mechanism to stop the dumping (installing high fences). I feel we are dangerously contributing towards global warming and environmental pollution. Raised a petition in Tamilnadu CM's complaint cell and it has been more than a month. Petition number is "2015/819247/XL" and the status says forwarded to office of Thiruvallur district collector. Due to inaction, I called up office of the collector several times over a span of 10 days but got back only empty promises. Hoping Swachh Bharath initiative will help.

I agree to all your points and glad to know things are positive in other places. There is no doubt Chennai is getting cleaner by the minute and in fact there is a lot of awareness within city limits just like Coimbatore and Delhi. It is mostly outskirts of the ever expanding Chennai these kind of things are happening. Such dumps cannot be cleared up by general public and needs help from local authorities. I have already taken this up with state govt but nothing has been done thus far. Hence posting in social media sites so that it will reach the right audience prompting some action. more
