Cancellation of Waitlisted tickets

By the policy of Railways, if your ticket is wait-listed and not confirmed on chart preparation, you are not allowed to board the train and if boarded, will be treated as ticket less traveler.

However, the situation is not known until the chart is prepared, which is barely 4 hours before departure. But by rule, the cancellation of the wait listed ticket is to be done 1/2 hour before departure, else entire amount is lost. Given that the railways decides to invalidate the ticket, should the passenger not be given an option to cancel and get a refund 1-2 days later? Everyone rushing to counter after chart preparation seems unreasonable.

We booked tickets 3 weeks in advance with waiting list 4,5 for onward journey and 2,3 for return journey. Pretty much told by everyone that they would be confirmed since 2AC would have lot of quotas which would be released on journey day.

But somehow for the onward journey only 1 got confirmed and other remained on waiting list. So we made alternate arrangements for one to travel by bus as it was an important trip for us. We could not think of going to the station to cancel as the bus departed much before the train and the distance between the two was more than 10 kms, needing us to travel about an hour each way. This is cumbersome when we are also making alternate plans for travel.

On the return journey, the status did not change at all, and it remained at waiting list # 2 and 3 even after chart is prepared. This is baffling to me that in 3 weeks not a single cancellation was done and no quota seats were released.

I would like to request the SCR GM to look into this. The train numbers in question were 12710 on 25th from Secunderabad and 12709 on 28th.

Also, request the railways to facilitate cancellation of wait listed tickets for up to 48 or 72 hours post departure. As such time limit is also not necessary as there is no impact on the travel of other passengers.

Request concerned authorities to look into these two issues. more

Being the cheapest mode of transport of the mass railways should show some lineancy. Since a specific seat is cancelled the railway system can very much verify whether the seat has gone idle or not and if not gone idle it can refund the entire amount less a nominal charge for administration. Railways should actually work out its actual cost and publish the ticket rates for the public to accept it. Since there is no free lunch in the economy people in general will understand that the railways also need to be paid for using it’s service. more
No need to cancil the waiting ticket, because if railway is not providing permission to board on train with waiting ticket, than formalities of canceletion is baseless. Railway should increase the transportation capabilities, so such type of waiting ticket may be confirmed. The software of railway should be upgraded so major changes should not be observed at the time of charting. In other words more
Internal Charting proses should be done by software on daily basis so confirmation of long wait list ticket at the time of Charting no cheating good impact. more
It is impractical and unfair to impose a time limit for cancellation and refund of wait-listed railway tickets when the party is not accommodated on the train due to unavailability of seats/berths. The party may be travelling on an important assignment and may be unavailable at station to cancel the tickets and seek refund. The Railways should do away with such unjust rules causing hardship and loss of funds to the common people. L.Kalavathi Retd. Bank Official Chennai, Tamilnadu, India 1st Feb 2018 more
So far as I understand Mr Daniel has been very active on such subjects. Reading the increasing number of grievances by train travellers it appears that a lot yet needs to be done to increase transparency and providing relief to passengers who, through lack of transparency until the last moment by the Railways, find themselves stranded for alternate arrangements. And for reimbursement of payments.... more
Cancellation must be allowed at least within 24 hrs after departure. more
