Many Indian cars still lack in basic safety features like airbags, Antilock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ECS) and we have so many deaths due to road accidents in the country. Can we please discuss this on what are current standards and what change needs to take place to make our cars safer...

The basic content of the post by Ajay Shah is on car safety standards and some of the members have expressed that even with the safety features, accidents have taken place and people have lost their lives. Does it mean that no safety be provided? Someone even said that helmets are being forced! In the absence of any statistics, is not wearing helmet justified? more
How many cases have you heard of accidents in India, where safety features saved lives? Accidents happen primarily due to bad roads or negligent and rash driving. Neither has to do with features in cars. Some of the high speed crashes of rich people happened in high end cars with all kinds of safety features, and still could not save lives. So that is a moot point. Which safety feature with save when hit by a lorry or a bus, if you are in a car? buses hitting dividers or falling into hillsides or water bodies, cannot be saved by "features". What can save you on a bike? Helmets are being forced on people, but no statistics on how many lives have been saved because of helmets. We have the central transport minister talking about "driving without helmet is akin to committing suicide", indirectly admitting that driving is accident prone. If the focus can be on quality of roads and adequacy, then a lot more lives can be saved. And educating the drivers about safe driving is equally critical. more
Most of the road accidents happen due to bad roads and careless driving. Youngsters are driving at very high speed and loose control. Car safety devices cannot help them. more
