Carbide treated mangoes are being openly sold in most of the supermarkets in Hyderabad. The retailers are fooling the people by sticking 'Carbide Free' stickers on the fruits. We realize we have been fooled only after coming home and tasting the fruits. What is the Government doing in this regard? Are the authorities hand in glove with the criminals? We expect the Chief Minister to take strong measures and see that the criminals are booked under law and their licenses cancelled. more
Calcium Carbide ( CaC2 ) when reacts with water or humidity produces Acetylene ( C2H2 ). This Acetylene changes green colour of raw mangoes to yellow, appearing that the mangoes are ripe from outside, while below the skin the mangoes are unripe and do not taste as naturally ripened mangoes. Moreover carbides are dangerous to health. State and Central Government should critically observe / check / monitor Calcium Carbide manufacturing companies, its transportation, and the stockiest also, as the governments do for Acetic Anhydride, a vital chemical for the manufacturing of Heroin, a narcotic compound. It is appalling that sale of fruits and vegetables are done in the open an the roadsides and also in shops unabatedly knowing well that these are injected or treated with poisonous substances. Visit any Kirana shop and what you come across are eye opening samples. There are outlets who insist on cash payments. There are outlets which give Kacha bills. When will the responsible authorities wake up? more
