cavery River

Of late lot of emphasis is given on the Cavery River. Bund, public meeting etc. Though the river passing thru Karnataka and Tamilnadu, the river flows larger portion in Tamilnadu. This river is main health life line. Party comes and goes and the situation never changes.
Every time, during rainy season the water flow and Karnataka state cannot hold and the water will ultimately come to TN Mettur dam.
I have seen a River Canal has been made for the effective use of water for the irrigation along sides of the river - from Erode to Trichy and further area.
I feel if we lay pipe lines for better conservation of water with junction boxes at every one km and plant trees on the sides for of the canal the better conservations and eco friendly Rain God will surely bless the state rather than depending on Human beings. Hope all will agree. Make excess water flow to our ponds and lakes, built during our Rajas period. Rather than conducting Morcha, if we request our thondargal to come and do the cleaning job of the Ponds and lakes under the banner of Political party, people will remember the party for the good job done.

I

This Canal open and during the flow more

Unfortunately Tamil politicians are only interested in conducting CONTINUOUS dramas and not interested in solving it at all. If solved, they all loose their living means and hence this drama. Unfortunately people have been brainwashed for a long time, to believe that only such politicians can solve such artificial problems. Were any new dam constructed? Check dams? Canals? avoiding of sand digging and smuggling the sand to the same state with which they are fighting? more
Supply water through pipes is not the solution to Cauvery Issue. Like Karnataka, TN also built dams across Amaravathy and Bhavani. Karnataka extended ayacut in Mandya district and upper reaches, TN extended in delta region. During normal rainy season, there is no problem. When there is a short fall in rains, issue raises. CMB is not a solution to this issue. We, both Karnataka and Tamilnadu, has to plant more trees in catchment area to get more rains. Atleast now we start, about 10 years latter, we can get more water. Now itself, Bhavani ayacut is facing crisis because of lesser rains. Construction of check dams or regulators is of no use as already required has been constructed. The only solution is we have to take steps to get more rains. more
My understanding of your opinion is avoiding evaporation losses when water passed through canals.
Evaporation loss is meagre in canals when compared to evaporation losses in dam and agricultural fields. Passing water through pipes is uneconomical as the ayacut are all along. It will be economical when water source and ayacut are far away.
My suggestion is we can lay solar panel to avoid evaporation instead of passing water through pipes. Its happening in Gujarat.
The terrain below Tanjore is flat and there are no Tanks fed irrigation in this area. Temple tanks are very small and not considerable storage. We can regulate water, but cannot store.
As an Irrigation Engineer to my best of my knowledge, these are my comments.
The main issue in Cauvery Irrigation system is increase in ayacut and lesser rainfall. more
Dear I think u never understood the point. I have referred the open canals thru which the water is regulated thru along side of the River for agriculture. It is there for more than 40/50 years. U will notice this canal from Bhavani to Trichy and further down. It is open & water is passed thru for kms. They should lay pipes lines thus avoiding evaporation and arrange re-distributing the water to various Tanks starting from Tanjore to Kumbakonam where Plenty of natural and temple tanks available in these area. Store the water and also plan to plant on both sides of the canal trees after laying Pipe line. This will bring desired change in the climate and help us to get rain.
Pls note, sharing of water even within TN they fight. Upper Cavery delta farmers will not let the water flow to lower area for irrigation. Hope u will agree. more
Where are the pobds and canals in our State. 95% of them have been swallowed by politicians.Unless people earnestly start thinking positively there can not be a solution. The political class will never allow people to think. more
it is certainly available in the area where the Cavery river passes thru. filling these tanks is enough more
A realistic and positive approach may help than a confrontation. more
thanks. I also feel instead conducting Maanadu by political parties, they should ask their members to try and visit Ponds and do the community work. this will certainly give best result and can be an excellent propaganda machinery for Party more
We need to ensure that the existing lakes or portions of lakes are protected from further encroachments and periodic maintenance (reclamation of the lakes) to the truest sense of the work. more
A chek dam at the catchment area at Ooty will solve the issue to a greater extent more
still there is room for more canals if we concentrate on our lakes, ponds and channelise water during monsoon. I have even wrote an article some time back to link the cauvery at mettur cutting salem city to vasishta nathi's tributary vellaru at Seshanchavady near sale. Vasishta nadhi passes through attur, thalaivasal and confluences with (swetha nathi) Vellar river that falls into bay of bengal at parangipettai. In between we have three big lakes and many tanks that can be filled. the distance between mettur and seshanchavadi by road is 80 kms. And criss-cross will be 60 kms. If this is done many areas will go green. more
I do not know whether you heard of Kattalai Kalvai, New Kattalai kalvai, South bank canal etc. In this SBC is old and both kattalais are new. more
